As he was “being driven” in the city, I’d guess that he was seen as a rich man in a fancy car being driven by a chauffeur.

Most priests & nuns that I’ve met live much better than my family does; better housing, newer cars, nicer clothing. If I were very poor I could see becoming resentful and wanting a little sharing of the wealth. Especially if I wasn’t Christian.

Bonnie, I can’t say that I agree with you 'though there are a few exceptions. Most sisters live in communities where the expenses are in line with the vow of poverty. There are some sisters that live outside of community for generally apostolic reasons. and may have regular paying jobs. However, they become masters of the Goodwill Sores or Salvation Army store, and know how to use whatever money they have in with keeping with their vows of poverty. In some cases they may be given a stipend to live on. As for a priest some do not have the vow of poverty, but generally live “poor.” They may have a salary from which they may need to buy transportation. Think of all the miles a priest puts on a car just to attend to his parish or even several parishes. Most parishes do provide a rectory for living or/and administrative duties. So, there is a lot more to be considered than just thinking that nuns, sisters and priest live better than you do. I could go on, but that is more than I want to get into. Peace.

There are no codes any longer.
This is also the complaint of people who have hardly anything to be stolen.
No “codes” means we are all vulnerable to this sort of episode. Rich ,poor ,old ,young.
Sorry for the cardinal ,glad he was unharmed.
Bizarre way to be all " equal"… " equally unsafe" !🤷

In cases like this, reality doesn’t matter, it’s perception that counts. If a bishop, priest, sister, or whatever is perceived as rich, then he/she is more apt to become a victim of crime.
