Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law SB 48 – which requires that social science instruction in California schools include the contributions of homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender persons to the history of the state and nation, the governor’s office said in a two-sentence announcement issued late this morning.

The bill had been strongly opposed by California’s bishops, who called the measure “unwise and dangerous.”

Good thing he isn’t with the SSPX, than all hell would break loose, in Rome.
If Jerry Brown were a priest (either in communion with Rome or in the SSPX), I doubt he would be governor of California. The Holy See, and bishops generally, hold priests to different standards of accountability than they do with lay people.

And, of course, he would have needed a special dispensation to hold public office if he were a priest. I don’t think those dispensations are easy to come by.

Hi, bkovacs. I’m just as upset and disappointed as you are. However, he has not been practicing his Roman Catholicism for some time. He still claims to have enormous respect for the Church (and attends important church functions, while not partaking of sacraments), but he has been practicing Buddhism, I believe, for some time. I believe Zen Buddhism rather than Tibetan Buddhism. Perhaps I’m even more disappointed at his departure from his faith than I am his recent decision with regard to educational curriculum. Because I wish he would return to Catholicism! (And had he, I doubt he would have been led astray to make this recent decision.)

…all hell would break loose…
It has, already! The Father of Lies is having a field day with Brown, Cuomo, Biden, and all of his other deceived “Catholic” servants.

The spiritual descendants of Judas are…legion? 🤷

I didn’t know that.

Well the good news is pretty much no history instruction is going on in the schools right now as the emphasis is teaching to the STARS tests in English and Math. Teachers in local district were instructed to ignore everything except English and Math through Middle School. Without high scores on these tests, the schools lose money and the administrators lose their jobs. I know this because my husband was reprimanded as a teacher for trying to teach all the subjects. And the direction was at a district-wide teachers meeting.

But bad news - in order to keep a veneer of obeying the new law, the school will have to once again purchase a whole set of new history books that include the new information. These are expensive, hard-cover books meant to last years and years, but somehow have to be replaced over and over with each new whim. And the schools are all broke already. I have a nice set of such “old” school books to supplement our home studies - saved from the dump.

More good news - the ranks of home schoolers will increase yet again, and this is nice for us old-time home schoolers. Its not so lonely anymore!

Jerry Brown is Catholic by his own admission. He was brought up Catholic, attended parochial schools and seminary. He worked with Mother Teresa in India. He says his Catholic faith informs his decisions in politics (sic).

He also spent 6 months studying Buddhism in Japan in the 1980s. Sort of like Thomas Merton, I suppose. However he doesn’t call himself Buddhist, nor could I find anything about him following regular Buddhist study. Does anyone have a link on that?

Gov. Jerry Brown married Anne Gust in a ceremony officiated by Senator Dianne Feinstein. Later the same day, they had a Catholic ceremony at St. Agnes, the San Francisco church where Jerry was baptized and his parents were married. The marriage is the first for both.

Buddhists don’t really think of themselves as a religion at all - it is a philosophy and folks of all religions are invited to study the concept and allow it to “add” onto the richness of their own faith.

So I guess he would be a Catholic and a student of Buddhism and Eastern philosophy. Now how good a Catholic he is, is another question altogether. But he wouldn’t be the first Catholic who has studied Eastern philosophy and religion.

I find nothing to disagree with in your post, sojo, except that while he acknowledges he is a Catholic by baptism and formation and even a recent ceremony, he also acknowledges not practicing that faith on an ongoing basis. He has, yes, continued to say that his faith does still inform his decisions. However, it seems that he is not entirely clear about some of the core aspect of that faith, given his recent positions on SSM and now SS curriculum.

I will say that in some respects he is more conscious of applying morality to his political decision-making, in other respects less so.

Also, I agree with the differentiation of Buddhism from “religion.” However, when aked about religion, he has also been quick to add Buddhist practices to any discussion of his own religious view/practices. (That was the context of my reply.)

Yup, we are in agreement! I do find hope in the fact that he has not denounced his Catholic faith and therefore we can hope and pray he has a reversion one of these days. He seems to be a bit lukewarm, obviously. I understand from friends at the capitol that he does still attend Mass on occasion, but is not a regular attendee. Neither was Gov. Arnold S., also a “pro-choice” Catholic, though his wife Maria attended with the kids more often. Of course, by now, we all know what Arnold was doing with his time away from Maria.

Now, a bit off topic, I learned this year that the famous artist Andy Warhol, who developed quite a reputation for outlandish and bizarre behavior, was actually a devout Catholic who attended daily Mass all his life! He sat quietly in the back and only rarely took communion so as to avoid drawing attention to himself and disrupting the holy Mass. His bios sometimes paint his apparent celibacy and desire for isolation from others as a bizarre part of his psyche, but it is now more likely he was celibate to protect his soul in light of his probable same sex attraction.

Live and learn!

So, what happens when a Catholic teacher refuses to teach such a thing? or if they don’t know their faith well, it probably is not going to be an issue for them. How weird.

Suffice to say I believe Gov Brown is scandalizing the faith, by still claiming his Catholic background while actively undermining the Church with the legislation.

It’s his will and his actions that are NOT Catholic.

I also think there are warnings about Buddhist pracitces. There is a difference between studying it, and actually trying to find something within the practice. Unless you are a theologically grounded, it’s not wise to study such pagan deceptions.

I think Jerry Brown is very worldly. He is my governor and I don’t see any aspect of whatever residual Catholicism left. Seems he’s turned away from his baptismal status. He’s more typical just like Joe Biden etc.

I respectfully disagree that he is even as worldly as many other politicians (i.e., in the sense of “material.” But maybe you didn’t mean in that way.) He has been known to be very frugal, including eschewing the idea of living in designated political “mansions” while holding political office etc. He has both a practical and a moral sensibility as far as trying to maintain a level of compassion with regard to public funds and those who are truly dependent (such as those who cannot earn a living), while attempting fiscal responsibility at the same time, within, I will add, an incredibly broken political system in his state capital. That system is what, i.m.o., needs radical reform and what will always hinder the most talented and non-worldly office-holders.

To an extent (obviously) the legislators are a reflection of the voters who put them there. However, CA legislators take their power further, and with considerably more abandon, than legislators of some other states do. They assume authority in areas that are not theirs to assume and legislate.

If by “worldly” you mean pragmatic, then I agree with you. He is pragmatic and a realist, but the difference is that he has more of a moral backbone in some areas (granted, not all, such as sexuality, marriage, etc.) than lots of public officials do of both parties. A purist of a Catholic is not going to be elected for high State office of a state as liberal as CA.

I actually don’t mind if anyone, including those in politics, acknowledges the beauty of their religious upbringing, as long as they do not represent those teachings falsely. I do not think that Brown has declared that his Church of birth is pro-choice, pro- SSM, etc. I am more bothered by individuals, public or private, who declare publcly that it’s acceptable to be a faithfully practicing Catholic while formally and materially practicing & preaching something very different. IOW, sentimental Catholicism, segregated from the teachings, doesn’t work for me, such as that (i.m.o.) espoused by Chris Matthews of MSNBC, who obviously does like the feeling of being Catholic and being raised Catholic, and says almost every week, “I’m a Catholic,” but who every week proselytizes for SSM. Every. Week. I don’t care that he hung out with Wuerl on the way to Rome or wherever they went together. (And btw, the Cardinal may have had A Talk with him during that trip, because Matthews came back subdued and silent for a few weeks on SSM, before reverting to his former self.)

Sorry for the temporary derailment…
😊

I appreciate your take, Elizabeth but I don’t see how any of some of what you say is true. For starters he is not frugal, he is not a principled politician, he’s a very slick one and has no scruples greasing the wheels, and he has basically tried to pass the buck and responsility by being “clever” about how to frame the budget bill through our horrible proposition system here, and passing more responsibility on locales…He has no choice to cut the budget so it doesn’t take much courage to make cuts.
I don’t know what “Catholic Purist” means, regarding a Catholic who should KNOW the basics, especially on Gay marriage, Prop 8 etc
A purist of a Catholic is not going to be elected for high State office of a state as liberal as CA.
You’re either faithful or you’re not. Arnold was lukewarm at best and he still got elected. He also used to be against Gay stuff, before he was for it. Prop 8 Still won in CA in spite of propaganda and Hollyweird Money. With God anything is possible.

I do agree that the legislature is tricky!👍 Also about C Matthews.
I actually don’t mind if anyone, including those in politics, acknowledges the beauty of their religious upbringing, as long as they do not represent those teachings falsely. I do not think that Brown has declared that his Church of birth is pro-choice, pro- SSM, etc.
He isn’t even just tolerating Gay Activism. He actively seeks to be involved in Gay Pride parades. That to me says he has given himself to worldly wisdom or is a nominal Catholic at best. He should say he is no longer Catholic. For instance he still likes to lead people on that he is somewhat Catholic (He did it in all 2010!) Also it’s impossible to appreciate the beauty of his religious upbringing and the Church and not defend it; it really means, he doesn’t know the real beauty of it YET! While not really standing up for its morals.

It could e construed that he is beign “pragmatic” by allowing himself give into the “mood” of the populace. It was also not pragmatic of him as the ATTORNEY General before he got elected as it was his constitutional OATH to uphold and defend the people of California regarding Prop 8. Both he and Arnold reneged on their own faiths that they still claim to respect and still ’ practice.’ It is affront to God, in my opinion, so it doesn’t matter how “realist” he is.

Here are two examples of him being OF the WORLD…

1.) He used a picture on his own site of him with Mother Teresa!
To lead people on that he is still connected to the FAITH

2.) He would talk up how he studied in seminary, talked it up big during the debates too. He fooled one of my family member, hoping that he would somehow be Catholic in his governorship. He gives the impression that he still embraces his faith on some level. Which is false by his actions alone, both on two non-negotiables. Gay Marriage and Women’s Right to kill an innocent.

A priest said in a homily those who turn away from their sacramental baptism, have a greater potentiality for Evil. well given that Jerry Brown is really, pushing hard this gay stuff, now onto the little ones?? I believe he is actively undermining the CHURCH in this state and the families within it through his active legislation. If Meg Whitman was elected at least we might not have this educational stuff not foisted into the education giving the gay radicals carte blanche to decide “who our gay heroes” were, which in turn allow the indoctrination to be shoe-horned in, where it isn’t just harmless, but more teachings and bad info to children on sexual identity and gender confusion. It’s a hypotehtical tho, meg is worldly too.

He scandalizes OUR CHURCH!

Oh yeah, all in the name of social justice. Here we go again. I think that the CC has been turned into a social justice institution all over the world. People have not realized that yet because equality, justice, and end of discrimination for all sounds very good to the itching ears.
