RELATED STORY: North Korea threatens to ‘sink’ Japan, reduce US to 'ashes and darkness’RELATED STORY: UN Security Council unanimously adopts North Korea sanctions
North Korea has fired an unidentified missile from the Sunan district in its capital, Pyongyang, in an easterly direction, South Korea’s military says.

The South Korean and US militaries are analysing details of the launch, the South’s Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The missile flew over Japan, Japan’s NHK television said.

South Korea’s presidential Blue House called an urgent National Security Council meeting.

The North’s launch comes a day after the North threatened to sink Japan and reduce the United States to “ashes and darkness” for supporting a UN Security Council resolution imposing new sanctions against it for its September 3 nuclear test.

The North previously launched a ballistic missile from Sunan on August 29, which flew over Japan’s Hokkaido island and landed in the Pacific.

More to come.

NoKo might be doing this in order to “draw” countermeasures so it can see how they work. Japan probably did the right thing in not attempting to shoot it down.

Our PM has just held an interview. He says it’s a response to the UN sanctions. So the sanctions are working in that NK is ( my words) throwing a hissy fit

My prayers too. Troubling. A miscalculation might so easily occur.
In any case, really not a good thing.
Heavenly Father we entrust all relating to NK intention and action to Your grace,
and the countries threatened by NK, to Your merciful protection

This guy in North Korea really makes nervous. Praying for a peaceful resolution.

The way I see it, the Kim regime is using this to intentionally make himself look like a loose cannon so nobody else will get involved in his stuff. Frankly, the only reason that DPRK hasn’t been invaded yet is because China doesn’t want ROK – or any other American ally, for that matter – on its doorstep, so a war with DPRK wouldn’t be worth the trouble.

If DPRK does shoot somebody, that changes the calculus quite a bit: China will look terrible on the world stage if they defend someone who engaged in an unprovoked (possibly nuclear) missile attack on a foreign nation and even if they manage to win that diplomatic tussle, they will have to contend with the existence of a nuclear nation with a track record of firing missiles at countries it doesn’t like, which is something that countries tend to not like. Not to mention that the United States will unleash powers from beyond the skies on DPRK either way.

The Kim regime knows this – they haven’t held an iron grip on North Korea for almost 70 years by being stupid. So they’re not going to shoot anybody, because they know that it will be suicide for the regime.

Not only that, but they can probably tell where the missile is headed based on its trajectory, if it is expected to land in the ocean then why waste an anti-missile missile (or whatever they are called).

Sure. When you know it’s not going to hit you, why give away information on the characteristics of your defensive system?

Since the hurricane hysteria is over it is time to turn back to the existential threat of a North Korea. Despite it being an utterly impoverished example of the economic system we are more closely approaching it is some great threat to us. Sure we have troops massed at their border. Sure we conduct naval exercises miles from their border. But their leader is a nut job bent on world destruction for conducting his own military exercises.
