It was just confirmed.

Anyone got better details? The Holy Father has been looking gaunt over the last year.

I’m shocked.

If true, hope he points to who he feels is best to replace him …that would carry a lot of weight with cardinals.

He will resign effective the 28th of this month. AFAIK age was the primary cause. My prayers are to him. :signofcross:

I always believe that Peter, knowing he was to die …communicated to those in Rome who he wished to carry the Cross for our Church in visible way.

Anyone know what he would be called?

When a Bishop resigns, he becomes an Emeritus. Yet, when a monarch resigns, the monarch reverts to the title of Prince or Princess. The Pope is both. Would he be Cardinal Ratzinger again?

And the words “Former Pope Benedict XVI” leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I would also imagine that he wouldn’t be around when the new Pope has ceremonies; it might be a distraction if two Popes were there.

The travel schedule is brutal on one his age. I believe he will tell cardinals to consider a young, vibrant successor, like JP2 was.

To think of it, it’ll be the first papal resignation since around 600 years.

CNN guest commentators suggest it might be more due to his mental state. His statement did mention that.

I think Ratzinger would have been the type to stick around even if his body failed. I’m guessing they’re probably right then, it is more due to failing mentality.

Incredible. He talked about just this in the Seewald book. I never thought it would actually happen.

Two extremely historic transitions in a row. Really incredible.

I admire him for knowing he is not physically up to the job. Let him write again, let him use his last days to give the Church another brilliant written masterpiece !

Well, being a pope is very demanding, I guess. I hope to God we get a worthy successor to him.

There wouldn’t be two Popes, but nonetheless Benedict would be a distraction if he were to hold any office in the Vatican in the reign of his successor.

He is not resigning his devotion and life’s calling
…that will always be foremost in his mind. And we know he has prayed many months over, and is sure this transition is will of Christ. Only Benedict has that private revelation from Christ on this decision…we cant second guess him.

I did my Baccalaureate Thesis on Conclaves and I don’t even know how to factor in a Papal Resignation into the timeline. Theoretically the Conclave could begin 1 March if the Pope decides.

Can they even get this all together in a matter of two weeks?
