G.B. Re, I believe, as long as EWTN is on current terms.

Thanks for that.

Yes, he just turned 79 according to Wikipedia.

So how does this go? Who asks the new Pope if he accepts election? Re or Sodano?

I’m presuming Sodano will preside over the Mass of the Holy Spirit. But in the Sistine, before the Extra Omnes, will it still be Sodano or will it be Re?

Canon Law seems vague on that topic if the Dean is too old to sit in Conclave.

Call me crazy but I’m happy that the transition this time is coming with a resignation instead of a death. John Paul II’s passing is still a sad memory.

Funny, I was just reading a book about the 2005 Conclave this morning and watching a video of the Panikhida last night.

More details are in from Father Lombardi. If you have the PopeApp, check it out.

The Holy Father will not take part in the Conclave.

He will move to Castel Gandolfo when the resignation comes into effect, then will move into a monastery within the Vatican which is undergoing renovation at the moment.

I wonder if he’ll still wear white.

It was just confirmed.

Anyone got better details? The Holy Father has been looking gaunt over the last year.

I’m shocked.
I think it’s interesting that the whole scenario of retirement and conclave may well unfold entirely in the season of Lent. By design, I wonder??

Probably.

Consider today as well. It’s the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, and the reading was with Jesus saying it’s not His time yet. Providential design on that issue.

I am not surprised. He previously said he would resign if he couldn’t carry out the duties of being pope due to age and health. Also, I assumed either rightly or wrongly that he didn’t necessarily like the traveling inherent with the position.

Let us pray for Pope Benedict XVI and his successor.

Also, this will inevitably spark discussions over papabili.

Nice connection!

It just seems likely, having read many of the Pope’s works, that he would choose a time of spiritual renewal and vigor for the Church to make such a momentous decision.

Is Pope Benedict still technically a Cardinal? I understand that Cardinals over 80 can’t vote. If he were 79, could he technically have helped choose his successor?

I always believe that Peter, knowing he was to die …communicated to those in Rome who he wished to carry the Cross for our Church in visible way.
Perhaps Pope John Paul did too!

Actually, LilyM, clarification on the date. UDG says that there must be 15 to 20 days after the Papacy is vacated (went back and looked it up vatican.va/holy_father/john_paul_ii/apost_constitutions/documents/hf_jp-ii_apc_22021996_universi-dominici-gregis_en.html).

So, I guess there won’t be a Conclave beginning on 1 March, unless if theoretically the Holy Father decreed to start it earlier. It’s technically possible (I guess today we’re learning things that are “technically” possible really can happen – like a Papal Resignation), but his resignation statement said that it would be up to the competent Cardinals to put together the Conclave. So I take it it means he’ll be hands off with regard to the start date.

Hmmm you know what else, if the Conclave begins mid-March, the new Pope’s Inauguration might be on Palm Sunday – definite symbolism there as it’s when Christ made His Triumphal Entry.

What’s God trying to tell us?

Last Pope died on Divine Mercy Sunday – the Feast that he himself made universal and proposed by a saint from his home diocese. God was telling us to pay attention.

Let’s hope we understand what God is trying to tell us now.

Now that the Pope has resigned and once a new Pope has been elected and installed would Benedict still be considered to be infallible in matters of faith and morals?

After all he will still be same man he was as Pope Benedict XVI. In fact, can we have two people who are considered to be as such.

I don’t ask this question lightly. How can a person be considered to be infallible one moment and not the next. I was taught that infallibility was with the man and the God would not allow him to make errors in the realm of faith and morals. So I am troubled with the question of now the duality of the doctrine of infallibility.

From how I understand Catholic teaching, I don’t think he can make infallible pronouncements once he leaves office. The Pope speaks infallibly “Ex Cathedra” - or from his Holy office. Without that office, he remains worthy of deep respect, but he is not longer acting as the successor to St. Peter.

As an aside, I do pray for the Catholic church and pray that while I don’t believe in Papal Infallibility myself, that the Holy Spirit continues to guide the Catholic church as it has so very obviously done in good Pope Benedict XVI.

I don’t believe he will have that capacity any more, as it is a special privileged granted by the Holy Spirit specifically to the Pope. He won’t be Pope anymore.
