That’s the funny thing. Nobody knows. Even the Vatican spokesperson said they don’t know what his title would be.What do we even call him now? Surely not Pope and perhaps not even Benedict? Is he still Benedict if he resigned? Does he go back to his bishop title/name?
The thing is though don’t past popes usually retain the title of “pope”? I mean we still refer to Blessed Pope John Paul II not Blessed Karol WojtylaThat’s the funny thing. Nobody knows. Even the Vatican spokesperson said they don’t know what his title would be.
Pope Emeritus? Former Bishop of Rome? There really aren’t any titles that sound nice to the ears.
Hmm, fair point. The thing is though don’t past popes usually retain the title of “pope”? I mean we still refer to Blessed Pope John Paul II not Blessed Karol Wotyla
Would he not still be known posthumously, to future generations as Pope Benedict XVI even though he lived out the rest of his life as not the Bishop of Rome?
Looked for it…didn’t catch it, what did you notice ?Video of the announcement just came up

Check out the expression on the Bishop on the right of the screen.
He looked shocked to me.Looked for it…didn’t catch it, what did you notice ?
I have read that his closest aides and the cardinals present were unaware that he was about to resign. He looked shocked to me.
Also look at Marini, for a brief moment there’s a look in his eyes.
Yeah Lombardi didn’t even know! I’m guessing Ganswein and Bertone knew, and probably the other Papal Secretary and whoever is the Undersecretary of State now, but you’d think that at least the Press Office Director would have been told beforehand so they’d know how to field the questions. I mean, Lombardi acknowledged, there isn’t even a title ready for him.I have read that his closest aides and the cardinals present were unaware that he was about to resign.

Was that Cardinal Sodano speaking after his resignation? If so are there any English transcripts of his remarks? I caught a little of what he said, but I don’t speak Italian so…Yeah Lombardi didn’t even know! Underlines how severe the Holy Father’s problems must be.
I’m reading Sodano’s statement and it seems as if he didn’t know either, because he was speaking off the cuff and didn’t have a ready response to the Papal resignation.

Being a pope is indeed demanding (the reason that Pope Celestine V resigned, if I recall), and I respect him for his decision. Hopefully we will receive a worthy successor, by the likes of both Benedict and John Paul II.Well, being a pope is very demanding, I guess. I hope to God we get a worthy successor to him.
Sorry, I have no idea. Thanks for that.
Yes, he just turned 79 according to Wikipedia.
So how does this go? Who asks the new Pope if he accepts election? Re or Sodano?
I’m presuming Sodano will preside over the Mass of the Holy Spirit. But in the Sistine, before the Extra Omnes, will it still be Sodano or will it be Re?
Canon Law seems vague on that topic if the Dean is too old to sit in Conclave.
