Technically the Supreme Court did not rule definitively against Newsom. They vacated the lower court ruling and threw it back to them in light of the recent similar case in New York. The stay is temporary. If the lower court finds, after reconsideration, against Newsom’s restrictions, then the stay would become permanent. The reasoning is based on the inequity between churches and other businesses that are not so restricted. It is not a broad ruling on restrictions in general.
