I think this is all part of the trend to spectacularize weddings, and feed the wedding industry, not the marriage. No where does all this folderol make a good marriage, including and especially jumping in a pond or river or the ocean in a $1,500-$10,000 and up dress worn for one day. In the past 30 years, it has gotten worse, to the point where a couple feels compelled to live with each other for years (I’ve heard three years and counting upwards) in order to afford a “proper” wedding.
I’m not saying go back to the time when the bride wore black, dark gray or brown because her wedding dress became her “good” dress and those were servicable colors.
It should not take more than six months to a year in my opinion to put together a servicable household, plan a reception, and most importantly, prepare for the Sacrament of Matrimony each part of the couple will confer on the other- living separately until there are vows exchanged.
