The Anglican diocese of Brisbane and the Catholic dioceses of Brisbane and Toowoomba will next week sign a covenant that will strengthen the ecumenical ties between the churches and commemorate a relationship reaching back to the foundations of Queensland.
Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane Phillip Aspinall, and Catholic Archbishop John Bathersby of Brisbane and Bishop William Morris of Toowoomba will be joint signatories to the covenant at a combined act of worship at St Stephen’s Cathedral starting 7.30pm on Friday May 29.
Catholics throughout Brisbane archdiocese have been invited to the historical event known as “A Celebration of Our Common Sesquicentenary and a Signing of the Anglican and Roman Catholic Covenant” .
The event will also mark the 25th anniversary of Archbishop Francis Rush and Anglican Archbishop John Grindrod’s signing of a Common Declaration in support of ecumenical co-operation in St John’s Cathedral on the same date in 1984.
Dean of St Stephen’s Cathedral and member of the covenant’s organising committee Fr Ken Howell said he “vividly remembered being present at this ceremony”.
“All present were filled with hope and optimism for the greater working together of Anglicans and Catholics as a result of the agreement,” Fr Howell said.
Project officer for the archdiocese’s sesquicentenary celebrations Catherine Newell said heads of many major churches throughout Queensland, as well as public dignitaries, have been invited to “this significant ecumenical event which will take place during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity”.
The covenant, which will be made available along with other documents for study purposes to local Anglican and Catholic parishes, schools and other communities, commits to a range of ongoing ecumenical activities.
Among these is “to celebrate an annual Ecumenical Service of Reconciliation … to be held as near as possible to November 4 (Anglican Roman Catholic Reconciliation Day) and to be rotated around the three cathedrals and the Anglican parishes in Toowoomba”.
Other initiatives include the promotion of an annual joint clergy day for the clergy of the three dioceses to reflect on shared pastoral, social or theological issues; the exploration of possibilities for co-operative use of church plant and resources; and a review and celebration of a re-affirmation of the covenant every three years.
Acknowledging the covenant would not permit the Anglicans and Catholics to do everything together, due to their differences. The signing was nonetheless a cause for celebration and a reason to thank God, Dr Aspinall told Christian Today.
The covenant would be reviewed every three years and be amended to reflect changes facing both churches.
I really dislike this!,The Anglican “Archbishop” is well known as someone who doesnt really hold many christian beliefs…amoungst them he let the heritic John Shelby Spong come and publicly speak at his Cathedral. untop of that he is also know to be activly persucating one of the few Anglo-Catholic (High Church) Parishs in Brisbane into accepting women priest and bulling them via threating to disolve the finicinal trust that operates this paticular parish.
The prob is Arhcbishop Bathersby isnt much better. before the realese of Summorum Pontificum the archbishop restricted the use of Old Mass in his docess…granting the Latin mass community of brisbane (a very large community by the way) to only celebrate the sunday Mass, refusing them permission to celebrate the Christamas Mass’s and feast days, and then he tried on serveal occasions to shut it down alltogether.
added to that the Mass celebrated at his Cathedral is incredialbly liberal with inclusive language ( i remeber one Midnight mass that he called us all “Christian people” about a million times but did not once use he word CATHOLIC).
untop of that there is the 15 year old complaint about the Parish Church of Saint Mary’s, South Brisbane (which has now been resloved…sumwhat) which I and many catholics here firmly belive woul never have been resloved if Rome hadent interviened.
then there is the report of new age nuns in the Archdiocess worshiping a Godesss they belive to be “Sophia” (wisdom)
The Catholic Archbisop and the Anglican Archbishop are 2 peas out of the same pod
something stinks in the Archdiocess of Brisbane…and this “covenant” stinks along with it!
