Cardinal Keith O’Brien, the president of the Bishops Conference of Scotland and Britain’s most senior Catholic clergyman, will use his homily on the feast of Christ the King, the week before the official introduction of the new Missal translation, to warn politicians that ‘insulting, demeaning and attacking one another’ devalues democracy.

They’ve been doing it for centuries so such admonishments may be a bit late.

Even if it’s been going for as long as there have been politicians, it doesn’t hurt to admonish them to strive to be better now and then. I don’t know how things are in the UK, but in the United States things seem to be nastier than in the past. It’s even becoming pretty standard to accuse one’s political adversaries of treason, even if all you are talking about is funding a social program or slightly different visions for immigration reform.
