Britain has become a Catholic country

This was written in 2007. Things will change dramatically when BREXIT is sorted out. All those Polish Catholics may leave in waves. The article doesn’t say what the ratio is of non-British Catholics vs British ones, but my guess is that there are a high number of Europeans.

Salutations,
It may have been great while it lasted. There may be the ripple effect. We can hope. Sweet Jesus. It’s your church… let the praise flow.
In Jesus name,
Tweedlealice

Yeah, and I have to say, many (not all, but a significant #) of the British posters here tend to lament the state of the Catholic parishes in Britain.
No funds for education, and declining Mass attendance. 🤷

One thing worth mentioning, though, is the excellent relationship that has developed between Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Cardinal Vincent Nichols. They seem to like each other immensely and have worked together on several projects. Here is a video of an event they did together for the Alpha Leadership Course. You can see how well they interact.

It’s true to say that mass attendance among Catholics in the UK (25%) is higher than most other Western European countries, and London has one of the highest mass attendance figures for any city in the in the world (40%).

The article is slightly misleading as it looks at church attendance rather than membership as a proxy for religious adherence, and the Church of England does not have Sunday obligation as we Catholics do. In this context, It’s important to remember that there are just over 5 million Catholics in Britain compared with around 28 million Anglicans. In terms of church attendance Catholic mass attendance has always been higher than the Church of England. However there has been a faster decline in catholic mass attendance than CofE church attendance since the 1960s so the numbers attending weekly services are now virtually the same in both churches though of course, those numbers represent a much smaller proportion of Anglican adherents compared to Catholics.

This is an excellent article, and I encourage everyone to read it.

2067: the end of British Christianity

Unfortunately Damien Thompson seems to revel with glee in his interpretation of secularism, not just in Britain but in the rest of Western Europe and the USA… He had previously predicted in the mid 1980s that there would be no churches left by the millennium and guess what…

What I think has happened is that people who no longer practice their faith are less willing to describe themselves as Anglicans or Catholics or whatever. His predictions also ignore the fact that the rate of decline for churchgoing has slowed down for Anglicans, has been eliminated for Catholics, and has been reversed in other Christian denominations.

All good points, and I hope you’re right. 🙂 It strikes me as an overall accurate piece, though, despite his obvious dislike of Christianity.

But then, you do live in London, so you’re able to gauge the mood and the situation better than I am. 🤷

I may be reading the wrong things, but I was under the impression that, if anything, Britain was becoming a Muslim country: Sharia Law being accepted in various communities, Mohammed being the most common new baby boy’s name.

yup. I believe NPR reported that as well.

Good points.

I believe you are correct, from everything I’ve read and heard. In fact, the new mayor of London is Muslim.

I found this article stating that the Muslim population of UK in January this year, topped 3 million for the first time. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3424584/Muslims-UK-3-million-time-50-born-outside-Britain-Number-country-doubles-decade-immigration-birth-rates-soar.html

I found a figure of 64.1 million as the UK population. At the time that the Muslim population was exactly 3 million, it represented 4.6801872074883% of the population.

I think you are reading the wrong things.

Didn’t Fox News report last year that Birmingham was a Muslim city imposing Sharia Law on all inhabitants? Major embarrassment afterwards in taking it all back.

I think we all need to have a bit of perspective here. Oh, and start reading/listening to reliable sources.
