British bishops suggest Eucharistic adoration, saint costumes on Halloween [CC]

From 2000 to 2004 we had Adoration from 11:00pm followed by Mass at midnight to celebrate the New Year. There were quite a few of us who appreciated this alternative to ushering in the New Year with drunken revelry.

In 2004, we got a new parish priest who was not interested in staying up for this and since it wasn’t a Tradition, he cancelled it.

There isn’t a big Halloween observance over here, although the stores keep trying to push it, putting out halloween costumes and candy. I got some candy last year, but had no trick or treaters.

I lived in Scotland for 4 years before coming here to Australia. They didn’t observe Halloween there either. That was 25 years ago so maybe things have changed.
 
I went to a Methodist Youth Group in my younger days, and the leader was against the idea of Halloween so he organised a Saint’s Party for the following day, with everyone dressed as a Saint. I dressed as St Andrew, complete with fishing rod. Since he was a “fisher of men” I put a cardboard cutout of a man at the end of the fishing line, which brought some unintended comments from the other members, if you get my drift 🙂

Kool…there was always an alternative gathering at church for the kids to replace halloween…

On the evening of 31 October why not do something to make your faith respectfully seen and heard? Light a candle or display publicly another kind of light, for example, perhaps alongside an image of Christ. This could be a powerful way in which we can show people that we have hope in someone other than ourselves.
