My parents are 39 years of marriage now; so you have them beaten. My wife and I are going on 11 this July. For my pathetic generation 10 years is like 50, miraculous stuff. People get divorced over television shows and poptarts in my generation!

I was watching on YouTube this series of debates in England about whether the Catholic Church was a force for good or evil in the world. Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry, the two infamous atheists debate against Anne Widdecombe, a British Catholic politician, and this African archbishop. I was appauled at the snobbish, hateful, cynical tones and jabs at Catholicism for all the wrong reasons. They go on and on and on about the Enlightenment and how religion, specifically Catholicism, is hostile to “thinking” and intelligence. Fry disturbed me greatly when he said that “truth is still a quest” that we haven’t found yet! He can look Christ straight in the eye like Pilate did and ask “what is truth” 2,000 years later and it’s standing there right in front of him yet his precious Enlightenment hasn’t provided the answer.

I saw it a few months ago. I don’t think the poor archbishop’s first language was English. Widdecombe is a decent MP (she’s one of those who ‘Poped’ when the C of E voted for women ‘priests’), but not very popular.

Up against two slick, ‘classically British’ professional speakers, they didn’t stand a chance.
But at the end of the day, Hitch is a drunk, and Fry is a TV quiz master. What does Ecclesiastes say about the counsel of such characters? Exactly.

Only in a Christian society could Hitch and Fry have been allowed to make such comments about the institution that built their civilization. Under other religious systems…well, let’s just say their clever 'eads would swiftly have been commissioned as lamp post ornaments.

I concur with everything you say here; they picked two weak characters to support the Catholics and two intellectual Enlightenment-brain-washed yet very adept and suave atheists. Not much of a fair fight when you get these two “gentlemen” and load the audience with a 9:1 ratio of atheists to believers. Yeah, real fair! LOL…
