As much as I love England historically, it is such a secular, atheistic, Enlightenment-laden country. I hate the fact that the Queen is tied to the Church of England. I can’t imagine that system here. Obama and Pelosi naming bishops. Yeah, that’d be just dandy! LOL

I agree. I hate it when non-Americans make disparaging/dismissive comments about Americans being ‘religious’. Because it’s often followed by some vacuous, spineless comment about ‘Europeans’ being more ‘enlightened’. Where do they think their civilization came from? For years a growing, unintegrated Moslem community have been the recipients of Europe’s liberal generosity. I hate to see when the Islamists show them what they think of their precious ‘enlightenment’.

I saw that debate last year, and it’s a shame. They didn’t even try to make it a balanced debate. On the “No” side was a man who makes his living bashing religion and Catholicism. On the “Yes” side was a politician and an Archbishop who couldn’t even speak Engish.I was watching on YouTube this series of debates in England about whether the Catholic Church was a force for good or evil in the world. Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry, the two infamous atheists debate against Anne Widdecombe, a British Catholic politician, and this African archbishop. I was appauled at the snobbish, hateful, cynical tones and jabs at Catholicism for all the wrong reasons. They go on and on and on about the Enlightenment and how religion, specifically Catholicism, is hostile to “thinking” and intelligence. Fry disturbed me greatly when he said that “truth is still a quest” that we haven’t found yet! He can look Christ straight in the eye like Pilate did and ask “what is truth” 2,000 years later and it’s standing there right in front of him yet his precious Enlightenment hasn’t provided the answer.
I was blown away how the vast British audience lauded and cheered and clapped and hooted and hollared for Fry and Hitchens and their atheist bent but boy when the Catholics talked it was grim and head-shaking time.
England is more atheist than the Soviet Union was!
Go to Youtube and watch these Intelligence squared debates. I just typed in “catholic debate” and it came on. Absolutely stunningly sad!
I would have liked to see the actor who plays G.K. Chesterton on EWTN take them on – and using only old quotes from Chesterton’s published writings! (The American Chesterton Society’s magazine actually does employ this same concept in a “Dear Abbey” format in which Chesterton “responds” to a fictional contemporary letter writer.)
Cool idea but I think one Chesterton would have sufficed.When I was a kid on G.I. Joe, Cobra decided they needed a new, super evil, master genius leader so they took the DNA of Hitler, Genghis Kahn, Caesar, Alexander the Great, etc. and they make this guy named Serpentor. We need to make a Catholic version of Serpentor and take JRR Tolkien, Chesterton, Karl Keating, Newman, Aquinas, and Augustine and finally add a twist of William F. Buckley! That’d teach those pesky British atheists to mess with us!
I think the first direct exchange we had on a CAF thread was on this very topic, maybe six months ago. I forgot about your “Chesterton blind spot.” Well I’ll try not to persecute you but I am a huge fan. What’s not to love about an overweight, cigar-chomping, six-foot-four English journalist with a love of paradox and beer?
