What should I do with a broken scapular? The string broke, should I burn it or what?

You can either burn it or bury it. Those are usually the 2 options to dispose of something that is blessed. Of course I like the idea of burning, I get to play with fire! 😃

:juggle:

I was going to say, tie a knot in it.

I was enrolled into the Brown Scapular when young. I recently bought a new one and can’t get myself to wear it because I know I’d soil it and wear it out in no time at all (gym, physical training and heavy duty nursing). How do you all get around that?, do you buy several scapulars (like I’ve got six white shirts in the cupboard so I’ll always have a clean one for work)?

I’ve been wearing the same one for the past three years. I never take it off. When it breaks I’ll get another one.

As to the used ones I keep them on my altar at home. I don’t think I could throw them away, burn them or even bury them just yet.

And I have quite a few of them there.

I don’t want to sound too scrupulous, but is it ok to take off in the shower?

Yes i do.

I keep my old scapulas hung around the neck of a statue i have of our lady at home. I wouldn’t burn or bury mine, the blessings attached to them will at least be inside my home permanently. 🙂

Second that. 👍

Personally, I do buy a handful at a time, but I only use one at a time, until unsuitable. Then I collect them until I have a pile sufficient for burning.

The cheapie ones tend to fall apart if you even speak the word “water”, so after the first shower, I do a little surgery and knotting for a more secure sacramental.

I mend ours all the time. The children have scapulars with small medals on them that wear the string (cord) out faster. Since the cords started out too long really, I simply sew them back on with a bit of brown thread. This is not forbidden, but not required either.

If you can’t sew (or don’t want to) you should burn them (fun!) or bury it. Please don’t just throw it away!

Edit: or keep them!
