They are just another way to be reborn.
For a very long time, but not endlessley. Once you attain nirvana (enlightenment) then you are not reborn when you die.
Because when gods die they are reborn. When an enlightened being dies he or she in not reborn.
[The Buddha said:] “What do you think, monks: Which is greater, the tears you have shed while transmigrating and wandering this long, long time — crying and weeping from being joined with what is displeasing, being separated from what is pleasing — or the water in the four great oceans?”

To avoid all evil,
to cultivate good,
and to cleanse one’s mind -
this is the teaching of the Buddhas.

- cleanse one’s mind: meditate.
Simple but obvious. Not easy either. For a Christian meditation you might try saying the Jesus Prayer or alternatively just counting breaths.
