Actually, let me put it this way: there are an almost infinite number of things that we could believe in. The Hindu gods, the Zoroastrian gods, the Greek and Roman gods, Cthulhu, leprechauns, pixies, the Christian god, the Muslim god, the Wiccan goddess, the god worshipped by the cult down the street, etc.

But, in practice, most of us don’t believe in the vast majority of those things. Why not? Because there’s no evidence for any of them.

And the default position is not to believe in something until there’s very convincing evidence of it.

And thus, “There’s probably no [insert supernatural thing here].”

It is my observation is that athiests believe collective human intelligence provides proof that thier is no god. Intelligence is not the highest faculty humans possess. Perhaps it is not athiests then who have their eyes open to reality, but the thiests.

Look at St. Joan of Arc, at Zeitun, at the -different- letters and -many- books from -separate- people all across time testifying to the same thing.

No one is disupting that people believe strongly in their religions. I am disputing that the supernatural claims of those religions correspond to objective reality.

Just because many people sincerely believe something doesn’t make it true.

Just because something impacts the world doesn’t make it true.

No, I don’t think that and neither do most atheists. The reason we don’t believe in god is because there’s no evidence for one.

And evidence is acquired through the senses, analyzed by the human mind. Would you accept only objective, empirical proof? What about subjective? Psychology uses subjective evidence to describe and understand many mental health and social issues. They use stories and human experiences, find repeating themes and develop a theory. Can you prove emprically some one is schizophrenic and hears voices? Maybe there are brain waves or MRI results that could offer such proofs, but mental illness has always existed even before psychologists assigned diagnoses and MRI machines. So has spirituality always existed. The fact that most people throughout most of time have believed in some being or power higher than man is powerful suggestion that such a being exists. Spirituality is inherently within each of us.
