Bus-size Squid Washes Up on Beach

This is kind of neat. I had heard that giant squid are pretty rare, or at least hard to find because they stay so deep.

A squid as long as a bus and weighing 550 pounds washed up on an Australian beach, officials said Wednesday.

“It is a whopper,” said Genefor Walker-Smith, a zoologist who studies invertebrates at the Tasmanian Museum.

Giant squid apparently do not taste so good, but their smaller cousins are a fine treat – and not as rubbery as octopus. I love calamari (with deep-fried zucchini, marinara, and a couple lemon wedges…mmm), though I’ll usually pass on raw squid nigiri sushi.

I have to oppose Mirdath on this rare occasion --squid is really only tasty raw or grilled, just my opinion (and a whole bunch of Japanese people agree). Edible in other forms, but they are far lesser when they resemble chewy onion rings!

Also, I have always been a big fan of Architeuthis and the other big squids – indeed, should we one day discover there are immense Antarctic-shelf mollusc cities, I will jump for joy…straight on to the soonest-departing Mars rocket available.
