George W Bush and Tony Blair must be held to account for feeding the public “a vast tapestry of lies” about the Iraq war, writer Harold Pinter said.
The playwright launched a scathing attack on US and UK politicians in his lecture as winner of this year’s Nobel Prize for Literature.

Most politicians “are interested not in truth but in power and the maintenance of that power”, the 75-year-old said.

His speech was pre-recorded as Pinter was admitted to hospital this week.

Let the character assassination of Pinter begin! 😛

Okay. Who is he? It wouldn’t feel right assasinating someone I’ve never heard of.

Ah. A Nobel Peace Prize winner…like Arafat. That makes for great credentials. And Literature nonetheless…that certainly makes me stand up and take notice. I’m sure he will make a great impact in the war debate.

Not, not the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Literature Prize.

Sorry. Same organization that gave Arafat the Peace Prize though, isn’t it? And again, I give him about as much credence as I do the nutball actors who speak out against the war.

Another idiot leftist, why he doesn´t say nothing about christian in marxists and islamic countries, it´s very easy criticising western politics, the society can applaude you, the another, you can be killed.

These liberals are very cowards. It´s like Greenpeace in China, I don´t listen nothing about them.

Idiot leftist???

Born 10 October 1930 in East London, playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist. Pinter has written twenty-nine plays including The Birthday Party, The Caretaker, The Homecoming, and Betrayal, twenty-one screenplays including The Servant, The Go-Between and The French Lieutenant’s Woman, and directed twenty-seven theatre productions, including James Joyce’s Exiles, David Mamet’s Oleanna, seven plays by Simon Gray and many of his own plays including his latest, Celebration, paired with his first, The Room at The Almeida Theatre, London in the spring of 2000. He has been awarded the Shakespeare Prize (Hamburg), the European Prize for Literature (Vienna), the Pirandello Prize (Palermo), the David Cohen British Literature Prize, the Laurence Olivier Award and the Moliere D’Honneur for lifetime achievement. In 1999 he was made a Companion of Literature by the Royal Society of Literature. He has received honorary degrees from fourteen universities. Pinter’s interest in politics is a very public one. Over the years he has spoken out forcefully about the abuse of state power around the world, including, recently, NATO’s bombing of Serbia. His most recent speech was given on the anniversary of NATO’S bombing of Serbia at the Committee for Peace in the Balkans Conference, at The Conway Hall June 10th 2000.haroldpinter.org/home/index.shtml

And? I don´t criticise his work but his politics opinions, it´s very easy criticising western politics, very easy, it isn´t criticising islamic and marxist regimes like Theo Van Gogh killed by a muslim. He was a truely politics interest. Not Mr Pinter.

Yes, some of their awards are a bit odd (though in 1994 it seemed there was hope that a breakthrough had been reached, IIRC). Some of the awards that seemed wrong at the time (at least to me) turned out rather well, like David Trimble. I didn’t like that guy at first, but he turned out to be an effective worker for peace.
And again, I give him about as much credence as I do the nutball actors who speak out against the war.
Why are they nutballs? They have as much right to an opinion as the rest of us. Maybe criticise the system that implies their opinion is more important than mine, but that’s a different matter.

What about them? There was a sizable minority of Christians in Iraq but we don’t seem to have cared about them much. There is a sizable minority of Christians in Palestine, but the views of many on this forum seem to favour Israel over our Catholic cousins there. And as for Marxist countries, you’d be hard-pressed to find one nowadays. China is totalitarian capitalist, they only hold onto the label ‘communist’ for political reasons. Maybe North Korea, at a push.

I am worried about christian iraquis, for them, I am not so pro-war like before, they are suffering too much and the “islamic” democracy isn´t my idea of democracy.
Respect Palestine, yes, we have differences, but I want a Bethelem christian and not muslim.
Respect China, it doesn´t matter if it´s a capitalist or a marxist dictatorship, it´s a dictatorship.
In Cuba and North Korea, in Laos, Vietnam and others there are a lot of problems.
Christians in the american muslims allies like Morocco, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are in a very bad situation too.
Look, which causes you can fight, and not bashing Blair and Bush, this is so easy.
For this reason I call him in that manner.
Greetings

In fairness, not all of them are “nutballs”, but that description (my personal assessment of them) has no bearing on their right to an opinion. I agree with you that the system gives celebrity opinion more importance than warranted.
