Actually, President Bush gave the Holy Father the best welcoming reception, even better than whatever was according to Pope John Paul (or Pope Paul VI, for that matter) by Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush (41) and Clinton. The fact that he showed up to personally meet the Holy Father on the tarmac was amazing.
Before people start flying off the handle regarding a possible conversion, might I remind you that Tony Blair pretty much flew under the radar until the Westminister Archdiocesan officials announced his conversion after he left office. Granted, Britain is still not progressive enough to allow a Catholic to govern the country, but, the fact that Blair jumped the Thames and went into the Tiber is quite extraordinary.
When I worked for the Texas House of Representatives, I had the privilege of seeing my former governor (now President) on a daily basis. He even called me by my first name. One time, during our Washington’s Birthday Celebration grand parade, he actually shouted out to me from his motorcade. I used to bring him Mexican sweet bread whenever I retunred back to Austin from home. Whatever faults and foibles he’s had certainly don’t diminish the fact that George W. Bush is a genune man of faith. He’s also a pretty decent fellow and was never pretentious when he served as our governor.
If he does, in fact, decide to join the Church, it will certainly be a moment of grace for him. If anything, I think that whatever dealings he’s had with Pope Benedict XVI will certainly have left an indelible mark on him that will last a lifetime.
