Bush in holy gaffe

This is a problem? Please! Non-issue. Dubbya is a vet, and those of us who even did a brief stint tend to “sir” everybody, even His Holiness. Mr. Bush also attended prep school, where male teachers are addressed as “sir”. The man is not Catholic.

“Sir” or “m’am” is the correct address for European royalty, as well, and esp. for Americans. These personages are not “Your Highness” or “Your Majesty” to us. Ask Miss Manners.

So, if Mr. Bush could not bring himself to call the Holy Father that title or “Your Holiness” then “Sir” would be the thing to call him. I assume he also called the Dali Lama “sir” and Queen Elizabeth II “m’am”. Both these individuals have a participatory effort in the religious aspects of their countries.

As for his ol’ buddy, well, that’s just an ol’ buddy. He didn’t say to His Holiness, “Hey y’all, what’s goin’ on? Been to the dove lease? Wanna go out and shoot some skeet, maybe have a Bud?”
This is not about what the Pope expects. It is about what we expect of our elected leaders…some respect. I would not call Presidentr Bush “George,” I would call him “Mr. President.”
And Mr. Bush, proper gentleman that he is, called him “Sir”.- not “Joe”, not “Ben”, not “Bubba” not “Y’all”.

As long as he’s not making up “intelligence” to start another war we should all be happy with our president.

Yeah I think this is non news.

He made a mistake. I bet the Pope wasn’t offended he knows everyone is human 😉

I agree we can make far too much of this kind of “overheard” reporting.

What I have seen in Bush’s presidency is someone who follows more closely the Church’s teaching on abortion, embryonic stem cell research, cloning, and respect for one man, one woman to constitute a marriage than many of our so-called “catholic” politicians.

good point. we know the prez didn’t intentionally disrespect the Pope, so there’s no real reason to make this an issue.

he probably should have brushed up on his etiquette, as one would when one meets the Queen of England, but his not having done so should be seen in light of his leadership on pro-life issues, which indicates (i think) a true understanding of and sympathy with the catholic position.

I understand your premise, but President Bush doesn’t even get the respect of being called President in our own press. He is often referred to as Mr. Bush by the MSM. I find that disrespectful.
I think this is yet another case of people conjuring up the most minute of issues so they can criticize the president.

Did anyone ask if the Pope or any Vatican officials had a problem with the way President Bush addressed the Pope?

The must powerful leader on earth certainly has the ability to greet someone properly. I do not see it as a gaffe, I see it as intentional. BTW, people are wrong to lump me into lefties who hate Bush, I have supported him through many battles and continue to do so in many battles…I just think he was wrong the way he greeted the Pope.

I agree, the way our President is treated is terrible, truly terrible. Yet, that does not excuse what he did.

I am sure you are correct, yet again this is not about the Pope, it is about our President.

 You mean he intentionally disrespected the pope? I don’t see how you have any evidence of that. It is very uncharitable to assume that without evidence.

Reminds me of this imfamous incident:

I think our President is a smart man and knows how the Pope should be greeted.

I find it interesting that our President did not greet the Pope with the customary title, yet Laura Bush had enough respect to wear a black mantilla head covering when she joined the President and the Pope.

Of course. But, that doesn’t mean he intentionally called him “sir” in conversation. (btw…for all we know from the article, it could have been once, and the rest of the time he referred to him as “your holiness.”) Smart people make mistakes as well. I often call one of my kids by their siblings name by mistake, it doesn’t mean I did it intentionally - and, yes, I am smart enough to know who they are. 😉

The man is used to referring to other mean as “sir.” He probably doesn’t use “your holiness” a whole lot in his life…

Laura Bush and Condi Rice (not going to even attempt to spell her first name) both wore them at John Paul II funeral Mass!

So, he was responding to a question and automatically said “yes, sir”. Ooooh, Gasp…The Horror!!!

Isn’t there anything more worthy to talk about for 3 pages?!?!?!?

You tell us…this is 1/3 of your posts so far today, so it was apparently important to you. 😃

Well, when you see such a headline, and 3 whole pages of commentary on it, you think it’s good, and then…nothing. It was aggravating. Thanks for pointing it out.
