Doesn’t Bush know proper etiquette? Sheesh!
Based on the article? He quite possibly slipped in *one *reference. That is all that was heard. I have no idea how he addressed the Pope during the rest of their conversations. People do make mistakes…even if the do know proper etiquette. Why think the worst?

I’m sorry. I should not have assumed the worst. The way I interpreted the quotes of the article was that he continuously made the same mistake over and over again. I guess I was wrong. Again, I apologize.

I don’t really think what Bush did was a gaffe. Bush is not Catholic. He doesn’t believe in the position of the Pope, so why would you expect him to treat him as such?
This is nonsense. I don’t believe in the position of Queen Elizabeth as supreme Head of the Church of England. Does that give me the right to abstain from etiquette and call her Mrs?
No.

Since I don’t believe in her role I would simply prefer not to meet her than have to pretend to respect her office.

No, but someone might call her “Your Majesty” and then answer a question of hers with “yes Ma’am.” Do you think the Queen would be upset with them?

she’s not the head of the C of E, the Prince of Wales is. just nitpicking.

we don’t know what bush’s intentions were when he declined to address Pope Benedict as “your holiness” so it’s impossible to arrive at a conclusion on this matter.

So he says “Sir”. BIG DEAL!! Compared to what some other Heads of State would like to call the Pope I’d say this is nothing.

I watched the president speak at the last National Catholic Prayer Breakfast.

You should have seen him try to say apostolic nuncio!
People laughed!

He also noted that they had it on a friday after Lent this year so that people could eat their bacon without having to worry about who was watching.

If the presedent said Sir it was, without a doubt, meant respectfully.
