Rumor is that John Bolton could be installed as US ambassador to the UN as a recess appointment when Congress recesses for August.

There is some concern that a deliberately belligerant move on this issue could put the SC nomination of John Roberts at risk.

Frankly, I think this is one instance where Bush can have his cake, and eat it too. The public doesn’t much care who is UN ambassador, especially if the issue has already been settled by a recess appointment. So Democratic grandstanding feigning outrage will be met with a ho-hum from the average American. That is, the portion of average Americans not distracted by vacations, back-to-school sales, summer barbecues and the like. The issue will be long-forgotten by the time the September hearings roll around.

I certainly don’t think Bolton is the best man for the job, but I would absolutely push this through if I were Bush. I’d either do it next Friday, when few are paying attention to the news, or I might save it up for a week or two in case it’s needed to distract the short-attention-span media from the Rove issue again.

“Belligerant move” being defined as “not conforming to the minority party’s demands.”

I got a snicker just thinking about this. I hope President Bush does exactly this.

Given the irrelevance of the UN how would one determine qualifications for a good UN ambassador? If the goal is to reform the UN or expose it as irrelavent then in either case Bolton seems a very good appointment. If we are trying to make a silk purse out of the sows ear that the UN has become then put any buffoon in there.

Everyone else who snookered us into the Iraq war got promoted. Why not Bolton?

No way Bolton should get this job, but the Democrats are being hypocritical if they oppose recess appointments. Did they compain when Clinton did recess appointments of Hormel and others?

Democrats are afraid of Bolton going to the UN for one reason:

Many of the liberal elite are involved in UN Food for Oil con and other corruption.

Maurice Strong is one. Oscar Wyatt* another. Most likely the trail leads to Marc Rich and possibily Soros.
