While this is certainly a significant and important step in historically sticky U.S. - Vatican relations, it in no way ought to diminish the value of previous Presidents officially greeting predecessor popes at the airports where they initially landed; especially considering that this is about the the only real opportunity one has had considering it is the first papal visit to Washington, D.C. since Jimmy Carter’s administration was in the White House 30 years ago during the 1979 trip of John Paul II.

No matter how Catholic he acts, until he accepts the whole faith and not just the moral positions, he is not Catholic. Would I love him to be? Sure. But I believe we were warned that is against forums rules so I’ll go no further and pray that this thread gets closed real soon.

Yes. We were warned about discussing “rumored conversions,” so we should avoid that. Luckily, that isn’t what the thread is about, so it is easy to avoid. All we have to do is discuss the article and whether Bush is “the first Catholic president” in the same way that Clinton was called “the first black president.”

Note: To my knowledge, no one hypothesized on the possibility of President Clinton actually becoming African American.

Clinton was not a black president and Bush is not a Catholic president.

Odd. The Pope allows Catholics to believe the Iraq war is a just war. Why are you more authoritative than he is?

On the issue of Supreme Court appointees, in fairness, it wasn’t Bush who selected them. He was given a list of candidates, by the GOP leadership. On his own, Bush picked Harriet Myers. :eek:

The thing that cracks me up is that anyone thinks that the Pope is going to come right out and say “yea…let’s go to war”…especially when ONE side already considers this to be a religious war!

Can you just imagine what would have happened had the Pope John Paul II or Pope Benedict “gave approval” of the war??

Al Qeada already calls Pope Benedict the “true enemy of Islam”…and let’s remember what happened the last time the Pope spoke about the war at all…"West Bank churches struck after pope remarks
