Okay, am I the only person who sees this? Take a look at:
news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080416/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_pope

Pay close attention to the picture, and read the quote: “We need your message to reject this dictatorship of relativism and embrace a culture of justice and truth,”

My pastor on Sunday told us to pay attention to the Pope’s message, (basically to follow Christ) and warned us not to believe what the mainstream media tells us.

So, we are being told to reject a dictatorship of relativism, against a backdrop of the Confederate flag

The Pope probably has no idea what that symbol represents, We should be ashamed.

I’m angry about this

Darn, that picture isn’t there anymore, you’ll have to take my word for it - theres a confederate flag flying on the White House lawn

Doubt it…there are 298 pictures on the Reuter’s link. Why don’t you find the picture, download it and post it. More than likely it is a state or historic flag that you mistook for the Confederate Flag.

What you probably saw was part of the state flag of Arkansas or possibly the flags of the states of Florida, Alabama, or Mississippi.

Picture #33 shows BXVI next to Bush with the flag of Arkansas directly behind the president.

Picture #34 (of 298) shows the Pope with the top part of the flag of Mississippi directly above his head. He is flanked by the flags of Indiana and Alabama.

Calm down.

Oh… Yeah. That’s okay then.

Given the huge number of pictures that reporters have to choose from, it will be interesting to see if this particular picture (#34) shows up again.

Alright… I’ve cooled down a bit… Maybe I over-reacted a little:o

But here’s the thing that bothers me. Yeah, there’s probably nothing blatant or significant about those particular flags in the background directly behind the Pope’s head, but it’s terribly ironic.
The message we are being told by the media becomes: "we need to fight moral relativism and return to justice (as long as it doesn’t change anything)

My mentioning what our pastor told us rings true, the media is subtly (sp?) twisting the the Pope’s message.

If we were to ask the Pope* exactly* what America needs to do (to get out of our mess we’re in), NOBODY would like the answer.

So instead we’re fed platitudes

Hey Mr. Bee,

Actually, it is the president who said…
We need your message to reject this dictatorship of relativism and embrace a culture of justice and truth,” Bush said in brief remarks welcoming Benedict to the White House. “In a world where some see freedom as simply the right to do as they wish, we need your message that true liberty requires us to live our freedom not just for ourselves, but in a spirit of mutual support.”
These are the quoted and paraphrased comments by the Pope:
“God bless America,” said Benedict robustly, to cheers from the excited throng.
Note…this “pastor” said ***bless. 😛 🙂 ***
The pontiff has said he was looking forward to meeting a “great people and a great church” during his first papal journey to the United States. The six-day trip to Washington and New York City coincides not just with his birthday, but the three-year anniversary of his ascendancy to the Roman Catholic Church’s top position. Nurturing the U.S. flock is a sensitive and important mission for Benedict at a time, not just of ongoing scandal in the American church but amid his campaign to tamp down secularism and re-ignite faith worldwide.

“I trust that my presence will be a source of renewal and hope for the church in the United States and strengthens the resolve of Catholics to contribute even more responsibly to the life of this nation of which they are proud to be citizens,” Benedict said at Bush’s side.

I’m sorry, I’m letting my emotion get the better of me and I’m not being very clear.

Let me say for the record, I’m fully behind the Pope and defending his message

I didn’t mean to suggest the Pope made that statement, I know it was the President. I meant to contrast the Pope’s message, which I believe is: Hope in Christ, to the message we see and read in this picture. That picture is not a bad reflection of the Pope, it’s a reflection of America.

Regardless of it being a full-on confederate flag or a Mississippi or whatever flag containing the symbol, don’t you see the irony?

Pope - Jesus
America - NASCAR

I’m sorry if you don’t see this irony

Um…no…how does a state flag = NASCAR?

I’m not sure what part of the country you are from, but it sounds like maybe you have some stereotypical distaste for Southerners? If I am wrong, I apologize, but that’s the way your comments appear. :o

Silly, THIS is the NASCAR flag:

Why leave? Why not explain what you mean? It seemed like a bizarre remark in relation to the Pope and President’s statements. 🤷

B? Did you get what Mr. Bee meant?

Maybe NASCAR is this tyrant that is being referred to.

I have lived in the South most of my life and have never seen a Auto Race and further do not keep up with NASCAR, but Bee what on earth are you talking about?

Well, I think so. But I could be wrong. You see me having the Stars and Bars tattooed on my left arm so; I just might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer. I think he meant that displaying the flag(s) or any part of the flag(s) of the Confederacy displays a Stereotypical Southern Ignorance (SSI). This SSI is epitomized in NASCAR. The SSI, which should be clearly seen by all, needs no explanation what-so-ever, and rests on no logical foundation, simply “is.” That SSI is thus juxtaposed against the Holy Father and his message. Then his knickers got in a twist because people didn’t get what he was saying.

If we could all just have that Vulcan mind meld skill, most of these communication errors would cease to be.

Live long and prosper, ya’all 😉 .
