Bush’s pro-life message marks ‘Roe’ anniversary
But spokesman says he won’t philosophize over church policies
…a question from Les Kinsolving, WND’s correspondent at the White House.
“With regard to today’s March for Life, does the president believe that the positions of Catholic Sens. (Ted) Kennedy, (Susan) Collins, (Christopher) Dodd, (Joseph) Biden, (John) Kerry, (Barbara) Mikulsi and (Patrick) Leahy and Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi on this issue, and their not being ex-communicated, means that Catholic Church opposition to all but partial-birth abortion is now as absent as the one-time voluble church opposition to contraception?” he asked. …
…Activist groups have called a number of times for those leaders to be excommunicated, a step that church leaders have not taken…

How are we supposed to respond to non-Catholic friends and family when they read articles such as this and question the Church’s stance on abortion? I don’t want to bad mouth our Church leaders. I know that there are things I know nothing about. But, this is so huge. I know the people listed have basically excommunicated themselves, but with the Church (and our Bishops and our Priests) being so silent on the issue it makes it really hard on those of us in the trenches, don’t you think?

I’m fortunate, in that I live in an area that is unabashedly pro-life, and we are always praying in the prayers of the faithful for the unborn. It is, indeed, true that politicians who are publicly “pro-choice” have effectively excommunicated themselves. I am all for Holy Communion being denied these people due to the scandal involved (unless they publicly change their positions.) I think bishops fear backlash and a negative effect on the Church’s tax-free status (IMHO.)

I think the church in general is reluctant to go around excommunicating people and kicking them out of the church. Frankly, the church can’t win on this. If they act and kick people out they’ll get criticized for that. They don’t kick people out, they get criticized. I think the general strategy is to try to reform these catholics and get them to repent and follow the church. At the same time, I do think they should be called out about receiving the sacraments for being out of communion with the church.

why not just deny them communion and not kick them out? i think that’s a fair response to catholic politicians who are so misguided as to publicly endorse abortion “rights”.

anyway i think a few years ago the us conference of bishops studied the problem and concluded that it was up to individual bishops to decide how to deal with the problem.

Have you noticed that Pres. Bush is not being praised much by the Catholic Church for his advocacy for infant life? The church should be effusive in its praise of his stance-but they’re not. Why is this? Notice that only a few members of congress are mentioned. What is unsaid is the sad truth that virtually ALL democrats in congress are pro-death, and virtually ALL republicans in congress are pro-life. You, the readers of this forum, are in the main the people voting these pro-death people into office-over and over again. The answer? Simple. Liberalism trumps all, including life. Its a sad truth. I believe Jesus weeps over the death of every one of these children. But we the citizens of this nation do not. Truly tragic. But it is not all hopeless. With the right Supreme Court justices, we can begin to reverse this thing. But regretably, when a dem. becomes president again, which it appears she is going to, it’ll be the likes of Ruth Bader Ginsberg who’ll be appointed and confirmed. Most experts predict that when a democrat is elected president, two or possibly three justices will announce their retirement, in the sure knowledge that their replacements will be pro-death, and pro-every other liberal cause.

Who will say, I always vote for republicans because they have limited abortion to just 45 million? It’s a scam. They did, do, and always will do nothing - and the democrats are craven. Figure it out already.

no. what i would tell my non-catholic friends and family would be to stop reading conservative garbage like WND in the first place.

It is difficult for the church in america to praise or give any sort of support to politicians in general because of tax expempt status reasons. The same reasoning behind the no-election talk here on the forums.

what makes you think the readers of this forum are liberal? i would say liberals are in the minority here.

There is, of course, no way to know if most of the posters on this board are liberal or conservative leaning. But from what I read here, I’m convinced most are liberal leaning. I don’t mean that as condemnation of them-I just think its a fact…
