Hello everyone,
I go to a state University, the place is like Sodom and Ghmora
Flying its’ rainbow flags and promoting its drug abuse amongst the Marijuana addict’s organization (NORML).
I could go to BYU Idaho for the cost of a community college; If I was LDS.
BYU has smaller class rooms and a strict honor code to live by if you wish to be a student in their university.
Catholic Universities are unaffordable for the working class man.
So I could convert to the LDS church go to BYU then convert back to the Catholic church after I get my affordable education.
If the Catholic church instituted the universities to bring education to the common man, then why is it only obtainable to the elite, and privileged members of society? The sons of Dr.s , Lawyers and CPAs? I’ve worked hard my entire life, as an
apprentice and journeyman steam/pipe/fitter/welder and industrial mechanic in the south. Every time I think of going back to that work it makes me sick to my stomach, and brings the worst out in me.
Are there any other working class people out there, who weren’t catered through school by their parents after high school that have any experience in these matters.
Its nearly impossible to get your engineering degree and have a real job, unless your one of these smart children that where special in school and had everything handed to them.
Government Grants and non subsidized loans I do not qualify for; because I worked for a living and paid for my first 100 or so credit hours, of freshman and soft more years.

Cheers! 👍

Just an FYI-it usually takes over a year to convert to LDS.

**Do not apostasize for the sake of saving on your college tuition.
**
Take the CLEPs, go to a community college for your freshman/sophomore core classes and then transfer to a state school for the upper class major courses. You will avoid the depravity by not taking lower level courses and by being a commuter.

First of all, I don’t recommend denouncing your faith in order to decieve a college into giving you a scholarship. I just don’t see that ending in your favor.

I supported myself all through university. I was one of those “smart kids”, but nothing has ever been handed to me. I worked my butt off. I had a job all through high school to pay for my extra curricular activities that helped me earn scholarships. I took honors and college level classes as a highschool because I knew they would save me money when I didn’t have to pay for those classes in college. While in college, I worked sometimes three jobs. I wasn’t elligible for financial need scholarships because my parents worked. They didn’t care that I was one of eight children. I had to earn my scholarships with good grades and test scores. I also had to take out student loans which I had to pay back.
I’m sorry you didn’t like your previous jobs. They sound like good jobs to me, but a person should try and do what they are called to do. I don’t know why you wouldn’t qualify for a student loan. Why don’t you think you would? Did you apply? It seems that they’ll give almost anyone a loan for incredible amounts of money that they will never even be able to afford! I’m sure you could get the money that way. However, the question is, how will you be able to pay it off if you can’t find an engineering job right off. Perhaps you could speak to an advisor at the college you want to attend and they can help you plan out what you need to do. If your grades are good from your first two years, you might qualify for a academic scholarship. You could also get a workstudy position. These are usually cake jobs. ($9 an hour to sit at a desk and answer phones in the admissions office while you study.) Anyway, once you get admitted to a university, they are generally thrilled to help you figure out how to keep paying them.

PS- I don’t see any evidence that Catholic university students are better behaved than state university students. (With the possible exception of the theology school.)

I worked as a prison chaplain full time while attending University taking a B.Ed degree full time in order to become a teacher.

I worked at the prison from 4pm to 11pm, and tried where possible to get morning classes. I did my papers in the afternoons.

I took courses throughout the year and finished my degree in under 2 years!👍

I graduated with a 3.9:cool:😃

Sometimes you just have to figure out a way. The fact that I was in my early 30’s really helped.

That sure sounds frustrating.

You’ve got the right idea - to find an opportunity that will allow for your schooling to be paid for.

Keep looking and find one that suits you, without having to jeopardize your soul.

Good luck! There are ways to do this!

If I understand correctly, the difference in tuition between Mormon and non-Mormon students at BYU-Idaho is $1700 per semester. If you are halfway through a four year degree, that would be a savings of $6800.

Certainly that figure isn’t anything to sneeze at. But is it really worth apostasy and engaging in two years of deception? Would living those sins would be easier to endure than simply rubbing shoulders with students whose morality you disapprove of?

Besides that, BYU might have other scholarships for non-Mormons that you might not know about yet. If that’s the school you really want, I’d call and see what they can do!

For one, I wholeheartedly second anything that has already been said about apostatizing for the sake of your tuition. That ought to be absolutely unthinkable.

That being said, Catholic universities tend to offer a lot in the way of scholarship money. My alma mater gave me a full ride, which was very very helpful (an understatement to be sure). You’re in central Florida, according to your account, so why not look in the region? St. Leo University, Ave Maria, and Belmont Abbey are all within reach. Just beyond that are Franciscan, CUA, and Christendom. If you’re willing to go as far away as Utah, why not look at Catholic universities which could be even closer?

Do not do that.
Look: I think that you have got a solid background to sustain the zoo of rainbow colors, of LSD and amphetamines, of sex, drug and rock’nroll.
I lived in places with the worst guys but I did not go with them. I found funny the zoo: you get features on people as you get features in the animals of the zoo: there are the crocodiles, the sheep, the lions, the elephants, the tigers, the snakes…
You just have to deal with them…
And you may be a testimony of the Catholic Faith.
Giving up on your creed it is not something God will want. And, I tell you, better be at war with the world with God at your side, that be at peace with the devil…

Start looking into moving your credits to a community college that is close to your parents or relatives house and commute to school. It’s far cheaper and you won’t be exposed to such craziness on campus. Ultimately you will be paying for tuition, fees and books and you will be cutting out room and board.

Make sure you are earning good grades and get involved with some volunteer activities and other things so you can earn scholarships for the transfer to the state school.

Community college is wonderful. It’s affordable and provides a fantastic education. Most of the students I go to school with are serious about their education and the classes are smaller and the professors are more approachable. All of my gen eds have had very small class sizes and the students were serious and ready to work and the professors were wonderful. Plus, it doesn’t involve the craziness on campus that other schools have.

Private Catholic colleges and universities tend to have robust financial aid office as well as ore donor support from alumni than other institutions. It would be worth it to call the financial aid offices of the schools you are specifically interested in and ask as it’s not widely publicized outside of the school.

Catholic schools offer excellent scholarships. My son was offered $64,000 over 4 years for one particular Catholic University ($16,000 annually renewable dependent on maintaining a certain GPA). He turned it down, because he chose to attend a different, more elite university, but don’t automatically write off Catholic schools as too expensive.

I think to engage in such a process would put your morality no better, or likely worse, than the “druggies” you decry.

How would you even think of such a thing?

Do NOT renounce your faith =/

I’m from Australia, and am attending a Catholic university. My university is very accepting - we have students from a great many faiths, and even some with no faith. There are also scholarships and support offered for people who cannot afford to pay fees - such support is getting me through my studies 🙂

Basically, the best thing you can do is ask. Get in contact with the administration or enrollment offices at the universities or colleges you’re interested in, and see if there are any particular requirements you need or any support you’re eligible for. Pray for guidance.
Faith is so important. To deny it for the sake of education - to profess belief in a religion you don’t follow - that is, to me, both unfortunate and unreasonable. Avoid it.

God bless, and good luck with your ambitions 🙂 And remember, all universities have an element of “undesirable” culture or practices - even Catholic ones =P

Greetings and thanks all for the replies,
I figured most everyone would be cursing me, lol. So its nice to see a more positive collection of warm attitudes (praise God)
I can qualify for interest loans, but I was talking more so of the free hand out loans, they give out generally in school.
I’m paying out of pocket currently after a severance package from my old power plant. I have a duty of obligations at home here, that I have to attend to in regards to helping, my dear ol’ mother with her bills and such thing. Non the less it is much cheaper and easier staying here and commuting 45 mins to the school.
that being said,
I guess my inquiry here was, really Why are Catholic schools so expensive if they are for the common man? I certainly don’t have a GPA that is high enough to qualify for all these scholarships; I’m not smart but hard working. I once studied roughly 18 hours to pass my first calculus class. The scholarships for private schools are generally given to people who are book smart. (3.5 + ) I have to work my butt off 24/7 living off of Redbull and Vivran, generally to barley get B’s and C’s I’ve learned very hard the value of a good education, compared to working in the mud and dirt.

Thanks for the reply Sparrowhawk, what I like about BYU is how those general people get thrown out for drinking or having concubines while attending. That being said, I don’t really see where I’m denying any faith, its all Christian as far as I’m concerned with out all the doctrine disputes. I would actually switch to the LDS faith before protestant.
Cheers! 👍

Thanks everyone for your replies.

The same reason why 6 or 12 China men jump into a Connex trailer with a 5 gallon bucket and a months supply of water, get thrown onto a freighter and have the border patrol open up the box with only 3 of them living at the end of the trip.
Code:
I could try to get on some Aderall and go back to work while in school. I've heard that the Aderall is like steroids for your brain. But is also chemically addictive and you loose your ability to study with out it. which to me would be scary.
Cheers! and God bless, 👍
P.S. Anyone here do Iron work or Boiler work ? I’d like to hear you chime in if your reading.

How can this post be serious? On a Catholic board, posting about should I convert to the LDS faith to save some money on college? How silly
BYU Idaho is affordable to anyone especially in contrast to other schools near you.
BYU is a great school. Did you know it has the highest Muslim population in for a student body. It is because of its values and morals. However someone as vulnerable as yourself who obviously is not well chatechized should not go into a situation known for trying to convert people.
