from the LA TImes link:

SANTA BARBARA – For 43 years, Sister Angela Escalera has lived and often worked out of her order’s small convent on this city’s east side, helping the area’s many poor and undocumented residents with translation, counseling and other needs.

Now retired and partly disabled at 69, the nun thought she would live out her days here, in the community where she is still an active volunteer and in the dwelling that was built for the order in 1952.

But she and the other two nuns at the Sisters of Bethany house recently received word that **their convent, which is owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, will be sold to help pay the bill for the church’s recent, multimillion-dollar priest sex abuse settlement.
**
The nuns have four months to move out, according to a letter from the archdiocese. The notice, which was dated June 28 but not received until the end of August, asked the women to vacate the property no later than Dec. 31 – and noted that an earlier departure “would be acceptable as well.” Signed by Msgr. Royale M. Vadakin, the archdiocese’s vicar general,

It’s very sad but I believe it was mentioned that they would have to sell some property to pay for the settlement.

There is no winning or “easy way” in this. It just needs to be settled and never allowed to happen again.

Why don’t they sell C. Mahony’s house? after all, he’s the one who shuffled the rapists around so that they COULD continue to molest?

As I have said many time before.

It is not the guilty that will pay for this “making things better” for those that were harmed.

I believe some were harmed.
I believe that the guilty should be held responsible.
I believe that the innocent should not be punished for others sins.

LA will loose schools, social services, convents, monasteries.
The Bishop will live in luxury while the nuns are tuned out.🤷

I was going to suggest that they get sleeping bags and camp out in the cathedral. They sould be at least as welcome as illegal immigrants seeking sanctuary. 😃

If Mahony needs money to settle his lawsuits, why doesn’t he put this monstrosity up for sale? It’s bigger than the convent, it’s certainly uglier, and since it only cost $190 million to build, he could probably unload it at a knock-off price of say, $150–$160 million. Somebody could probably use it for a warehouse or a grain silo.

My goodness! Definitely not my taste. What is that building?

That is the Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, dersively referred to as the “Taj Mahony” or sometimes “the Yellow Armadillo”.

Beautiful structure, isn’t it?

Cardinal O’Malley sold the archepiscopal residence in Boston, why does Cardinal Mahoney not do the same? The one in Boston was a mansion, what does the Archbishop of LA live in?

And yes, the Cathedral should be deconsecrated and sold as well.
One of the older, larger churches could be designated as the bishop’s seat.

😃 Oh good grief! I was so hoping you were not going to say something like that. Ummm wow. That most certainly does not look anything like a Catholic church. If I was looking for the Cathedral I would feel like I was at the wrong address if I saw that building.

Poor Saint Vibiana is buried in the crypt of that monstrosity.

I am inclined to think that the Cardinal and auxilliaries should sell their residences to pay for the abuse settlements- and maybe even the Cathedral, and buy cheaper homes- and build a Cathedral that is more tasteful- or find an old, large church to make into the Cathedral.

if you please, i do have a problem with a function of the legal system. we have witnessed two trials that occured, one involving the perpetrator of the crime, the other involving the handling of the defendant. our system of justice usually is to be tried by a “jury of your peers.” when it came to the “trials of personal liability” in the civil trials, were the juries and judges made up of “peers of catholics” or of those who harbor evil intent toward the catholic church? i personally have no knowledge of this but i do believe that this question begs answers. have a good year. (alih)🤷

I am sorry I have to say this. But that NEW Cathedral is one of the ugliest buildings I have seen. But it is my personal opinion.

If you think Taj Mahony is ugly from this view, be warned. The devil may be in the details here, too.😦
