St. John speaks quite a bit in his first letter about what is required to abide in Christ:
1 John 2:6 he who says he abides in Him ought to walk in the same way in which He walked.
vs 24 If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father.
1 John 3:6 No one who abides in Him sins
vs 24 All who keep His commandments abide in Him, and He in them.
1 John 4:12 No man has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and His love is perfected in us
vs 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in Him, and he in God.
vs 16 … God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
These verses tell us that abiding in God consists of imitating Our Lord, believing in Him and accepting His teaching, obeying His commandments, and loving one another.
