WOW…perfect and omniscient!! You even KNOW the depths of another’s deepest beliefs and struggles? You guys got game!!!
Perfect and/or omniscient? Nahhh… I’m just smart enought to recognize the galaringly obvious.

I’m also smart enough to realize that The Church DEMANDS of us, under Christian Charity, to make MS aware that what she’s dong is a mortal sin, and will land her in hell unless she abandons her totally, not only non, but anti-Catholic beliefs…

IO, you ***do believe ***in mortal sin and hell… don’t you?

To blame Rome and the Bishops is a ridiculous excuse for anyone, especially in this modern age.

There are so many resources to find the Truth, Sacred Scripture, the Catechism, and numerous websites like Catholic.com.

The real problem is not proper teaching, it is selfishness and denial.

The Church has always taught the Truth that our Lord Jesus Christ gave us. Unfortunately,it is easier to “pick and choose” what is popular with the current society.

If Jesus had “chosen” to tone down the Truth so He wouldn’t offend anyone, He would never have died on the Cross for our sins.

The very Apostles Jesus selected and personally trained all failed and were scandalous. That again is a weak excuse for those who do not have the fortitude to do the right thing, no matter what the cost to them personally!

“If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me”. Lk 9:23

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus.

isn’t it sad that so many Catholics in our country have bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD’s in areas of science, business, etc., but a second or third grade education in their Catholic faith?
I went to Catholic school through second grate in the 1950s. As a teen I drifted away from the church.

When I came back a few years ago I realized that the (pre-Vatican II) religious education I had gotten in those few years must have been better than that of many who have more recently gone through 12 years or more of Catholic school.

And I don’t have a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD in anything.

I’m just glad to be back to the full course meal in the sit down restaurant and not the cafeteria!

So many people here are apparently expert at labelling.

There are probably far more “cafeteria Catholics” than most of us would be comfortable with.

The phrase itself is interesting, since it was first applied to conservative Catholics who refused to go along with some of the liturgical reforms of Vatican II.

Given that Ms. Shriver prays daily and attends Mass weekly, she is part of a distinct minority among American Catholics, since 2/3 of us reportedly don’t bother with Mass at all. Clearly, her faith is important to her. Keep praying and striving, Ms. Shriver, and the Lord will stretch His arm to catch you when you falter.

Thank goodness for you perfect Catholics who try so hard to keep the riff-raff, sinners out!!

At least she was honest in her self-assessment. I think, however, “struggling Catholic” might be a less pejorative term since most of us do have issues with which we don’t have a solid understanding and thus acceptance or obedience.
She IS a lousy Catholic! She is precisely the kind of Catholic who gives the rest of us a bad name. For goodness sake she descibes HERSELF as a cafeteria Catholic-she’s not stupid, she understands that the term is pejorative. There doesn’t appear to be any “struggle” to me,she has decided that she knows better than the Pope and his Teaching Authority. The god that she worships stares back at her from her bathroom mirror.

When God whispers the magic words to you which allow you to definitively know someone’s spiritual state, does He speak in English or Latin? (It certainly wouldn’t be in Hebrew, because they’re not even good enough to meet your “lousy Catholic” criteria.)😃

Are you looking for a fight ?If so look elsewhere, little man.I do not presume to know Schriver’s spiritual state but I know what a lousy Catholic is-one of the pick and choose variety. Her husband is the Governor of California, she occupies a position in the public eye and she is giving scandal to the Church.

Lets see I’m a Catholic in good standing. But theres a few things I just dont agree with the Church on. Lets see theres that little teaching on murder, if I want to kill my child before he’s born what buisness is that of some old white men in rome? And then there’s that teaching on chastity; hey, if I want it I should be able to have it. This is what being a christian is all about, we all have diverse opinions, and Its all about what I think. My will be done. Jesus understands.
It’s our buisness to stop murder.
I suggest you read a bit written by Edward Cardinal Egan called ‘Just Look’ (ny-archdiocese.org/news-events/columns-and-blogs/cardinals-monthly-column/index.cfm?i=9314).
Also, on chastity, we must always relate sex to procreation; to do otherwise is essentially contrary to the Church’s teaching.
And, finally, it’s not all about what we think; rather, it is all about what GOD thinks.

Peace.

Jo Biden does all that too.

Using words like murder does not change hearts and minds.

Driving people out of the church is not pastoral. Jesus didn’t drive sheep out, he tried to find the lost one.

Maria Shriver and her governor husband have openly declared their ACTIVE support for same-gender marriage. They advocate unlimited “freedom” for mothers to kill their unborn babies. They call themselves “Catholic” but they are not only unfaithful Catholics, they bring scandal because they readily abuse their influence as public figures to wrongly lead others to sin. The Church (which includes each one of us) is to be a beacon of light to the rest of the world – a beacon to Jesus and His Truths. This couple does more than express their opinion but they actively work toward diverting people from Jesus when they reject His Truths.

The first three paragraphs from The California Catholic Daily; (Emphasis mine)

“I pick and choose”
California’s First Lady says she’s ‘a Cafeteria Catholic’

“I start every one of my days praying,” says Maria Shriver, wife of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. “I go to church every week. I went to Catholic schools my entire life.” But, says Shriver, when it comes to Church teachings, “I pick and choose… I think I’m probably a ‘Cafeteria Catholic.’”

Shriver’s comments came during a lengthy interview on the Washington Post’s video blog ‘On Faith,’ taped during an Oct. 22 women’s conference at the Long Beach Convention Center. Shriver, wearing a rosary around her neck, was interviewed by Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn and co-host Jon Meacham of Newsweek. Portions of the interview were posted Nov. 17 on “wowOwow,” a web site that says it is “run and written by Lesley Stahl, Peggy Noonan, Liz Smith, Joni Evans, Mary Wells, Sheila Nevins, Joan Juliet Buck, Whoopi Goldberg, Julia Reed, Joan Ganz Cooney, Judith Martin, Candice Bergen, Lily Tomlin, Jane Wagner, and Marlo Thomas.”

Shriver and the governor are members of St. Monica’s parish in Santa Monica, and she told Quinn and Meacham during the interview, “My pastor (Msgr. Lloyd Torgerson) is a huge part of my life.” But her closeness to her pastor, her regular church attendance and her Catholic education don’t seem to have discouraged her from** taking positions distinctly at odds with the magisterium**. “I have a dispute with a lot of the Catholic Church,” said Shriver in the interview. “Even though I consider myself a Catholic in good standing, I disagree with a lot of the teachings of the Church.”
Hey, excuse me but didn’t Martin Luther say something like this once…

Guess that makes her and AAArrrrrnoooollldd protestant!

Not true. Don’t know about the First Lady, but the Governor said he did not support gay marriage but would uphold a court decision creating gay marriage. When the supreme court created gay marriage, the Governor true to his word, upheld that decision of the court. Since then he has opposed efforts to overturn that decision. This is all FACT. 🙂

That’s wishful thinking on your part – you are misinformed.
Governor Schwarzenegger stated before the election that he opposed Proposition 8. Since Nov. 4th he stated he hopes the results will be overturned.

Search “Schwarzenegger and gay marriage” or something similar and you will find many reports about where he stands on the issue.

Thats really sad when a person in the her position openly admits shes a “Cafteria Catholic”. How this make our Lords heart ache! 😦

I too was dismayed to read Ms. Shrivers comments. After reading this discussion, I was wondering if anyone knows contact information (preferably an email address) in which we can attempt to charitably enter into a discussion with her.

Of course we must pray but we must also instruct the ignorant.

Wow. As if being a Cafeteria “Catholic” is something to be proud of!

Interesting that Ms. Shriver considers herself learned enough to decide what should and shouldn’t be part of the faith. As for me, I put my faith in God and my trust in our Holy Father in Rome for guidance.

I am not so much worried for Ms. Shriver, she has her free will and has only the Lord to face for her actions, but the real damage is to so many young people who are so impressionable and take her comments to heart. Without any response from our bishops, those same young people are left to assume her position is fine.

All the Kennedy’s make their own rules. I think as we watch the current news we see that. That Maria is herself admitting that she is a Catholic of the cafeteria type, well she thinks this is cute too. How clever Maria! I don’t judge her, but I am very disappointed in that entire family. To those on the outside looking in, the Kennedy’s give Catholics a very bad name.
