Problem is people want top-notch governnment services: clean and maintained roads, well equipped police and fire departments, and excellent public schools…but simultaneously, no taxes.
Not everyone. I would rather the government NOT provide these services. Perhaps police on a very small scale.

Seriously, a corporation handling the fire departments? Thats a nightmare.

Unbridled capitalism is as evil as communism. There’s a reason the Church opposes both: extremes are imprudent, unreasonable, and inevitably lead to evil, oppression, and devastation.

“Perhaps” police? So just private militias? Posses? Vigilante gangs?

You’re definitely an outlier.

Who would pay for the roads then? I’m not a fan of taxes or government overreach, but I do want roads that aren’t in total disrepair and bridges that won’t collapse when I drive over them.

What doesn’t sit well with me, though, is the concept of the government tracking people in order to gauge how many miles they have driven. That’s a little too big brotherish for my comfort.

The people who owned the roads would pay for the roads. Just add a toll and it would all be good.

You’re just a buzzkill Joe. I personally prefer the rush of driving over a very tall, very unstable bridge and praying to God it will hold.

When we had private police & private fire departments in the 19th century, it was a nightmare. In NYC, there were two police departments that actually fought one another, and the fire departments used to get into fights with each other too.

The role of the public sector is to provide services that are not profitable or too risky for the private sector. Police and fire protection would be a money looser for companies or they would only cater to the rich & famous (like private security companies do today).

We have a private fire department where I now live and it works great. We pay for the service if we want it. If my house catches fire and I haven’t paid, I guess the neighbors will all gather for a huge weenie roast.

Oh God, the idea of seperate, warring police departments is both hilarious due in part to the way you worded that, and terrifying at the same time.

Look how well Somalia is doing with no public police or fire! A shining beacon of small Government for all the world to see! 😃

where do you live? And are you sure it’s 100% private? Meaning, are you sure they don’t receive any money from tax payers?

I’ll say this. I used to live in Scottsdale, Arizona where they also have a privatized fire department. It works for them very well, also.

Ah, but you just get a season pass. They have those in New England.

Lemuel, I’m afraid I’m going to have to activate a Jesuit hit squad to come and get you.
