Vatican won’t consider excommunication appeal

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Call to Action-Nebraska will be consulting canon lawyers about how to press its appeal of an excommunication order issued by Lincoln’s bishop in 1996.

The Signatura – a sort of supreme court for the Roman Catholic Church – has refused to hear the group’s appeal of Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz’s blanket excommunication, which included members of the group, several Masonic organizations and abortion-rights groups Planned Parenthood and Catholics for a Free Choice.

Bruskewitz said the groups contradict and imperil Catholic faith.

The excommunication order was put on hold while Call to Action members appealed.

Umm… From what I have read, they had their final appeal. Case Closed.

Applause for the Vatican for supporting such a brave and faithful Bishop.

This is great news. Hopefully those excommunicated will reconsider their actions and rejoin in the communion with their fellow Catholics. Perhaps I could talk to our Bishop about doing the same here.

Now we need to figure out how to clone Bishop Bruskewitz without violating Church teaching.😉

There has been a number of great appointments lately. One of them was in Kansas City. When Cardinal Maida retires here, I hope his replacement will be as good.

Let us hope so – we have been wandering in the wilderness a long time.

Here in the Diocese of Little Rock, we have no bishop. Let’s pray we get one who is not afraid to uphold Catholic teaching. Our last bishop was pretty hot on making sure we had the proper posture at communion and that ushers wore coats and ties – but felt that witholding communion from pro-abortion politicians “would put them under pressure.”

How does the Bishop go about excommunicating an organization. Does he place an open letter that anyone who joins is excommunicated? Does he somehow try to obtain a membership list and send each memeber a letter?

How does that work?

this may be a little off topic but do catholic politicians still feel they must prove to voters that they are not puppets of Rome ,and so take anti CC positions on issues or are catholic politicians of today simply do not support the teachings of the church

As I recall, he published and widely distributed a letter declaring that all Catholic members of designated organizations would be excommunicated as of a certain date. I think he gave them a month or so to resign in order to avoid excommunication. I don’t recall there being any individual notifications…

I have to applaud a Bishop who actually upholds the Church’s teachings.

an organization cannot be excommunicated because organizatons are not initiated into the Catholic communion, people are. if you follow the story from its inception you will find in detail how Bishop Bruskewitz notified members of CTA and several other dissident organizations of this discipline.

He issued an excommunication on anyone who is a member of these organizations and did not renounce their membership and the offending principles of the organization in question.

Anyone who did not was excommuncated by their own actions.

In addition, anyone who joins these groups will also excommunicate themselves.

Until they repent of their errors, they may not present themselves for any Sacrament, nor may any minister in the world knowingly offer them the Sacraments.

It’s been a long time (around 1960) since I heard a Catholic politician say, “I don’t speak for my Church and my Church doesn’t speak for me.”

Nancy Pelosi, for example, claims to be a “conservative Catholic.”

In JFK’s time, they were legitimately worried that people would be saying, ‘Papal puppet’ if they did something pro-life or pro-Church. Now, that concern is invalid. So, there is no defense for Pelosi et al to hold their pro-abortion positions and claim to be Catholics, especially not ‘conservative Catholics’

JMJ

I recall a comedy routine at the time Bobby Kennedy was going after Jimmy Hoffa.

In a supposed interview Kennedy is asked, “Will Hoffa appeal?”

To which he supposedly responds, “Well, he doesn’t appeal to me.” 😃

In my personal opinion, I think that politicians actually get more votes by claiming to be Catholic (I don’t mean to be offensive to those politicians who actually are good Catholics). This way other Catholics and social conservatives feel OK with voting for more…liberal candidates.

I am reminded of Simon Magis, who sought to buy power from the Apostles, and use it to enrich himself.
