Calling All Catholics!

I think I am fairly objective - and I am not the only one who has noticed this on threads that start out, “Protestants…” It’s a set up; more times than not, they aren’t interested in hearing your why, they are interested in slamming the door on your response. I would think on a Christian forum that honest debate would be preferable to baiting.

But, I could be wrong.

I’m not saying that this doesn’t happen, what I’m saying is that the pendulum swings both ways, therefore if your aim is to improve honest debate then include Protestants and Orthodox and others into your criticisms not just Catholics. God bless.

Why do you think we would be interested in reading about how you’ve considered it and rejected it.

Because on this particular thread, entitled “If you have studied the Catholic Church & her Teachings from sources within the Catholic Church and as a result you did not become Catholic, Please Post here the reason(s) why?”, we were invited to do so!

You’re an adult. I assume you can figure out which church was founded by Jesus.

Based on what the Catholic and Orthodox Churches say, they are each the Church that was founded by Christ. Which Church left?

As I said in the previous post, you are an adult and can decide for yourself which church was founded by Jesus.

I’ve been posting here for a few years, and these types of posts come in cycles:

“Calling all non-Catholic Christians”
“Non-Catholic Christians - Did You Know?”
“For All the Protestants On This Forum”

The thread then starts off with something like “Let us assume that the Catholic Church is wrong”, or “Hypothetically…” or some similar sentiment.

Let’s just call it what it is: it’s baiting for a fight, pure and simple.

Is this just backlash against Catholic bigotry? If it is, I would suggest that Catholics not lower themselves to respond to such immoral behavior against people that should know better.

However, If it’s an honest attempt for conversation, do you see how it’s really not helpful?

Were I a wandering Christian without a church or communion to call home, I suspect I would feel more invited by kind and gentle sentiment than chastisement and less-than-genuine sentiment such as baiting and taunting.

True, but if Catholics had never responded to my invite for a fight, I’d still be a Protestant! The trick is to get the person to think about what you are saying rather than what she is going to say next. I find that asking questions is the best way to make one stop and think.

And perhaps the quickest way to figure out from where a person is coming is to ask her what, if anything, she will accept as proof that Catholicism is true. If she says, “Nothing will,” then you are probably wasting your time. If she ways something will, then, focus on answering that something, and avoid the temptations to go down rabbit holes.

I gave the Tiber a chance, but then found Orthodoxy to truly hold the Catholic Faith and was most faithful to the early Church. My conscience wouldn’t allow me to remain idle. My suggestion would be to read up on both, pray and choose a side.

I absolutely love theological discussion. I joined this board many years ago as an Eastern Catholic (after 38 years as a Latin Catholic). My journey has taken me to the Holy Orthodox Church and I continue to enjoy the theological banter.
