An unnamed woman, her face shielded behind a curtain and her voice masked, gave a harrowing account today of torture and sexual abuse at the hands of Saddam Hussein’s security forces during the trial of the former Iraqi leader.“They forced me to take off my clothes,” said the woman, referred to only as Witness A by the court. “They kept my legs up. They handcuffed me and started beating me with cables. It wasn’t just one guard, it was many guards.”

And this is only the beginning.

This post is for all of those out there who want us to run away from Iraq and give it back to the Baathists… whereever you may be.

What does Amnesty Intl have to do with it? I don’t recall them ever saying that the Saddam regime was some great bastion of human rights.

Mike

Yeah, what are you talking about? Amnesty regularly posted notices of human rights violations in Iraq under Saddam. Go look at the site yourself:

www.amnesty.org.

Look at their documents under Iraq. Its arranged under date order. There’s plenty of stuff in the 90s relating to human rights abuses under the Hussein regime.

All true. And yet, someone just recently posted on this forum that things would have been better if Saddam had remained in power.

The outrage over Abu Graib was much greater than any outrage in the press regarding Saddam’s cruelties.

BTW…as far as the Amnesty International comment in the thread title, remember the title has to match the source. Send a nastygram to the blogger for his hyperbole, if you like.

Ah, my bad. Good catch 🙂

No prob. Personally, I don’t like the rule…some titles, like this one, don’t match the article or the OP’s opinion.

Why call Amnesty International? They’ve been documenting atrocious regimes before many even knew of their existence.

And as much as I feel for this woman’s plight, you will not convince me that it cancels out misleading the nation for war. As for giving it back…is it really ours to give? Because I don’t want it.

Do you not think it should have been? We knew already that Saddam was a nasty person. Conversely, we expected much better of ‘our’ forces.

I’m tempted to ask what he’s on about 🙂 But yes, I remembered the forum rule, but still thought some light could be shed on why such a random title. Apparently not. Oh well :o

There’s not a single person on this Forum who wants to give Iraq back to the Baathists. I don’t doubt that there are some in America who might support such a perverted idea, but they’re not the sort who post on Catholic discussion forums or take their cues from Catholics.

So what would you prefer, politcal sanctions, economic sanctions? Just write the abuses down on a list?
