Calling local stores to remove racy magazines from checkout lines!

hey now–that’s not a bad idea. I love this store. They are the nicest people and this is a big chain in FL–called Publix. Not all of the stores have this nice of staff working there–they really go the extra mile. I feel the manager should know first. But, if nothing changes, I think I’ll go the route you suggest. It is just downright gross…I mean, it’s right next to the candy rack? I just wonder if anyone is using their minds out there, anymore?!

I’m surprised a big chain like Publix isn’t on this already. The Kroger stores in my area cover up those magazines with an opaque plastic sheet that conceals all but the magazine title. I think they started doing this when Cosmo started publishing covers with risque titles on them.

It’s possible that no one has complained yet at that store. Your call may rightly prompt the store to cover up those mags.

Not a bad thought. But, if someone wants a magazine like that, they should have them in an area of the store where it’s not in plain view…maybe where the cigarettes are or something. That’s my take on it. I’m far from a prude, it really has more to do with what all eyes of all ages are able to see, when innocently checking out at a grocery store.

That’s not the point. The point is that little kids shouldn’t be subjected to soft porn in the grocery store, nor should parents have to explain or deflect questions on what it means to “blow your man’s mind in bed”, etc. It’s about protecting as much innocence as possible in a world that already seeks to sexualize small children.

I was a bit taken aback…especially this store where so many teens are check out clerks. It’s like a small town kind of feel…I know people on first name basis…it’s so great…it surprises me that they weren’t a bit more cognizant of the display.

We need to take responsibility for ensuring that children and adults as well don’t have to be exposed to this every where we go. I know you’re not going to do anything. There is a sin of omission. The failure to something one can and ought to do.

I agree…I am usually pretty oblivious, sadly, when I’m on the grocery line…I’m watching to make sure all the prices are right, lol…so to my dismay, my dd finding it…ugh…bleck! Come on! It just doesn’t need to be there.

I think I’ll call the manager after Memorial Day. Thank you for your replies and advice everyone…you’re the best.

My dd was looking at the candy rack, and it was hard to miss. She then told me about it. My concern, is that I typically don’t notice, but my 12 yr old did…and that just irks me.

Use it as an opportunity to engage your daughter about the importance of modesty…

Where did I judge you? Huh? I pointed out that this problem should (should) concern all Catholics. What you do is up to you. But at no time did I judge you in any way.

Also, my generalizations, as you call them, are backed up by factual information. So when I write something I am calling all Catholics, not to my opinion but in defense of Church teaching.

The Kroger store in my area does not cover the soft porn, they just put it on the top shelf. Any teenage boy could reach it. The real question is: why is it there in the first place? It is degrading to women and it distorts a proper view of human sexuality, turning it into a product to be sold.

When I pitched a fit at my grocery store because of that particiular magazine, the manager tried to give me the “what’s the big deal?? It’s the swimsuit edition.”

To which I replied, “THAT would make more sense if she were actually WEARING a swimsuit!!!”

He removed the magazines.

Sorry I’m not rushing to confession over failing to call my locla store about these things. If you want to spend your time doing so more power to you. But I couldn’t care less where they place them.

Publix IS on this… that’s where I shop and they have those white rectangular covers that rest in front of the magazines.

I think that’s because one becomes immune to it. If every shop sold hardcorn porn, I suppose a woman who’s breasts are covered by beads would be no big deal? Thankfully, here in the US we haven’t fallen so far into the mud pit that a magazine with a half naked woman next to the candy bars is still thought of by most as inappropriate.

Jim, does it not bother you even just a little that a child would be the one who is looking at these magazines? I understand that a single adult might not be so scandalized by such pictures but a child?!

I would agree with you. But I’m not sure my young children would read the headlines nor would they understand what “orga#$m” means - a favorite word of Cosmo’s They would, however recognize a woman with her shirt off. Thankfully though they may just think “breastfeeding.”

Still, I think it’s the principal - they push the envelope more and more each year. What will future SI’s feature… swimsuit models without tops AND bottoms?
