No, I’m not assuming anything. I am suggesting that a penance could be an exit from public life and doing private penance.
How do you know she hasn’t done any private penance? Another assumption to insinuate that she is some kind of hypocrite and that “if she really was repentant she’d exit from public life”.
You are right that past sins probably won’t matter. Where we are today current sins are hardly an issue.
Okay, not sure what you mean by the last sentence.

And BTW, Saint JPII had a very deep involved public alliance with Ronald Reagan, a divorced man; though I suppose it’s possible his first marriage was annulled at some point as Jane Wyman was a Catholic and eventually became a third order Domincan, not sure if she’d have been let into the order without an annulment.

In any case, if that wasn’t some kind of horrible public scandal for the Vatican, I doubt accepting the appointment of Callista Gingrich as ambassador would be.

MODERATOR NOTICE

This is not a thread to pass judgement on the spiritual well being of the Gingrich’s marriage (which has already been approved by the Holy Church and we here are not authorized to undo it.) Instead it is a thread about a possible new ambassador to the Holy See.

If you wish to discuss the Church’s teaching on marriage, please do so in the Sacraments forum.

Please return to the topic in the original post.

So my question is how is this a valid marriage between Callista and Newt Gingrich. I understand that he converted, but is this her first marriage ? And if it is not, does this take her out of Communion with the Church ?
Hopefully this won’t be too OT. Just to clarify Church teaching on marriages.

If someone has divorced and remarried, simply having a prior marriage declared null does NOT automatically make the current marriage valid. I am sure the Gingriches had a convalidation of their marriage at some point. Technically per the Church, they weren’t actually married until that convalidation occurred.

Thank you Robert, I was confused at to what we were truly discussing. BTW, if the ambassadorship depended on her voice, she is a shew in. She sings beautifully.🙂

OK, what are her qualifications other than being married to a powerful politician with whom she carried on an affair while he was married to his second wife?
I was wondering what her qualifications are also. I think she sings in the choir at the Cathedral.

Yes, thank you Robert. Callista Gringrich is a fine choice for ambassador to the Vatican. We will miss Ella the Elephant for a while. 😉

Can we have an actual conversation about her qualifications? I am asking sincerely. Some ambassadors are merely political appointments, and the ambassador has no diplomatic background and no background in whatever issues may arise. Others are chosen for a specific reason. I have no problem with Pres. Trump picking Callista for either reason. (is that clear enough?) I am just wondering if anyone knows if she has a background other than being Catholic?

I’d like to be Vatican Ambassador, unfortunately my chances are greater to be elected Pope and win the lottery

And that is important why? Newt isn’t going for sainthood nor is he going to be appointed to any Church position (not that the Church isn’t made up of humans who are sinners by definition.) Newt isn’t even being appointed as ambassator, it is his wife who is.

Anyway, his current marriage is deemed valid by the Church, so this is a red herring in oh so many ways.
Newt’s not going for sainthood?? Isn’t that what we should all ‘be going for’?

What are the qualities of an ideal ambassador?
I would say being close enough to the administration to be an effective representative, and to know enough about the issues and culture involved with the country to be an effective communicator. Callista probably fulfills those qualities. Honestly, it would be a great job. I hope she enjoys it, I would.

She wouldn’t have been my first choice. Or third choice, for that matter.
Another gratuitous remark. With all due respect, who cares who you would have chosen, or anyone else for that matter. We are not in a position to do so. I am amazed at how many, on both sides, find it necessary to make snarky remarks. They certainly add nothing to the conversatioin.

Its all part of the ongoing hatred of Trump. It poisons everything
