So, this shows that Luther was fearful, bigoted and self-centered all of his life? There is no doubt that Luther was troubled in his younger days. This did not continue through his life. And what a joyful event that he realized the message of Roman 1:17.
I’m still very confused by your interpretation of this, and why you decided on this particular thread, where Luther’s theology was generally parallel to that of Catholicism, to launch this attack.
First, he was obviously not a martyr, but was clearly a theologian, and a brilliant one. This is not arguable, even if you disagree with him. But…
Let me see if I understand your position based on this source. When did he misunderstand the doctrine of Justification? Before his understanding of Romans, or after?
Seems to me that once he understood that we are justified by grace through faith, and not by any merit of our own, then he no longer misunderstood.

PS I wish to apologize for my harsh tone earlier. Just as Catholics bristle at what are clearly unfair attacks against Rome by Protestants, I tire of what I consider unfair attacks as well. I should have explored your thoughts first in the spirit of the 8th commandment.
I do not mean to negative; however, have you read any of his writings. This man was a bigot throughout his life. His changing of the number of books in the Bible was based upon him losing a debate to Eck in Lepzig and he had to refer back to Jerome for support. That is the sole reason that the Protestant Bibles are missing seven books. It was a man’s pride. Does this not sound like a trick of the Devil? (Jerome’s thoughts were proved wrong by the Dead Sea Scolls.)
Luther was not a great theologian. He was man that twisted scripture to fit his personal needs. He was a man that ran to the German Prince’s for protection and as such supported 100,000 peasants death. If I recall he stated something like “they should all die like dogs.” His life is tragic.
I could expound on Luther for a very long time; however, you may be correct that this is off the threads focus. The key difference though is we do not follow the teachings of a man. We follow scripture and follow the teachings of the Church. Luther’s religion is based upon his fears and reading the Bible backwards. Does this make sense to you? Doesn’t it sound a bit like Satan’s temptation of Christ. Or Muhammed refuting the teachings of Christ. The Devil doesn’t directly attack people he uses guile and persuasion. He uses truths and half truths to persuade people to stray.
Does it make sense that Christ would want tens of thousand of denominations all supposedly knowing the truth? If Christ wanted to change the Church why wouldn’t he just changed the one he appointed? Why would he a create a new one that would continue to splinter into tens of thousands of pieces?
No offence meant here.
