I’m no fan of Calvinism but you’re basically right, there have been plenty of scoundrels in the Catholic Church throughout the centuries. As will be the case with any institution populated by humans. And??? He was a human being. There have been many books written about the many wonderful things he did in governing Geneva in terms of education, health regulations, etc and for many his theology is nothing more or less than biblical exposition of scripture. There are also critiques. I am not sure this is any more useful than dredging up bizarre and sinful behavior of popes, bad behavior (sinful behavior) of the church and so on. Additionally, it is helpful to look at the time and not look at it with 21st century eyes. All characters of history are flawed except one!
And you’re also right about trying to judge the Reformation years with 21st century eyes.
