hey everyone. So, when i posted the question, i totally forgot that my family is planning a camping trip for this summer, so i think that it would be better to go with them (and probably a bit more fun. As to the potential awkwardness that some mentioned that would result if she said no, i’m no really all that worried. We have been together for 4 years and hav discussed marriage quite a lot and are very excited about our future together.

Nope, not okay. Don’t share the tent. It’s like sleeping in the same bedroom but different beds, don’t. It’s like sharing the same hotel room but sleeping in different beds, don’t.

Get another tent.
Ditto. They’re not that expensive, or better yet ask a buddy if they have one you can borrow.

You’re putting yourself in a situation to sin, but if you succeed in not sinning, then you’re a stronger person for it.
That’s like playing russian roulette to “strengthen your bravery”

I still wouldn’t ask in front of your family, but that’s just me. I wouldn’t have liked that ( and I love my in-laws!!)

If you strongly believe that nothing sexual will happen. I say go for it! You’re putting yourself in a situation to sin, but if you succeed in not sinning, then you’re a stronger person for it.
THIS. just don’t involve alcohol as long as you have your wits about you, you can make the right decisions. Proposing is a beautiful thing i did it just over a month ago and it was the happiest day of my life and my fiancee was so happy.

Keep it romantic with the two of you. Same tent, same sleeping bag cuddle under the stars just no sex.

WE are all afraid that you will get tempted because of the situation you are putting yourself in. i believe you will make the right decision. If you can honestly say no matter the situation you will not be tempted in this scenario then go for it…do the romantic bit look forward to hearing how it goes.

I view the marriage proposal as a mutually-agreed-upon merger. I know it’s romantic and all, but there are many discussions that need to occur before either of you decide. If you’ve had those discussions, then you are ready. But I’ve never understood the whole proposal and presenting the ring. You need to be clear headed when you decide.

However, being in a totally secluded area with one tent after a marriage proposal is asking for trouble. If she says no, awkward. If she says yes, you’re playing with fire.

Being in a group of people or family is even weirder. You can announce the engagement any time, but the decision should be private.

That’s a terrible idea! They should by no means share a sleeping bag! Even if they are engaged they are still not married and the standards should not change. A newly engaged couple, the romance and joy of that, it’s a recipe for disaster. It’s when we let our guard down and think ‘I won’t be tempted’ that the Devil sneaks in and catches us unaware. Bad, bad idea.

An engagement and proposal are related, but not exactly the same thing.

What you are talking about is discernement of vocation, an engagement. This should be done from the beginning of courtship, whether each should be married, faith and values, etc.
When decided that a couple want to be engaged, there is nothing wrong with a surprise proposal, in public or private. The “decision” isn’t made at the point of being presented a ring, it should have been made slowly in discernment.

And this is exactly where we are at. We have long since been past that “honeymoon phase” where everything is sunshine and rainbows, and the idea of marriage is more spontaneous and than anything else. We’ve had our arguments, worked them out, and are excited about our future together. We have been together for over 4 years. The only thing that has prevented us from getting engaged is that every time we manage to save up a little money, something comes up, like my timing belt snaps, an animal needs some crazy emergency surgery (happened once to her dog, once to mine). It’s frustrating. BUT, we’re finally getting to the point where we’re ready financially. Just working on one other thing and then I’ll be purchasing the ring sometime in the next few months.

Being alone = no?
Being in a group = no?

Is there some other way? What are you suggesting?

I assume the idea is that you go camping with your family but don’t propose in front of them. Maybe go off on a hike or something away from the campsite for the actual proposal. Best of luck!

Yeah, pretty much.

And thanks!

If you have your own sleeping bags, I don’t see a problem. I’d be more concerned about watching out for Jason Vorhees.

Aw, God bless you. I’ll pray for you and your girlfriend. 🙂

I’m saying that being alone in a campground with only one tent is asking for trouble, and being at the campground with a group an proposing would probably make people a little uncomfortable.

There are many other places to propose - you can be alone but not have sleeping arrangements that put you within inches of each other.

I don’t really see that it would be uncomfortable with family around so Lon as they weren’t present for the actual proposal. To be honest, I wouldn’t want to be isolated from everyone I know for a day or so after getting engaged, especially if you already are planning on marrying the guy, just waiting to be engaged. I’d want some private time and space, but then I’d wan to go share it wih everyone else I know, delegate with all your friends and family. So opinions do differ on this.

The only situation in which it would be morally acceptable to share sleeping bag is that one where you have no more bags, you are at 0 ºC and you have no option of sleeping in another place. Otherwise you are putting yourselves on an occasion of sin and you must avoid it.

I was going through my old posts and saw that I had started this thread a while ago. Thought I’d update a little, just to celebrate!

So I DID end up proposing to my girlfriend last July but not while camping. She said yes, and we got married three weeks ago on September 20, 3013 in our home parish!
