Can one consider a blessed or venerable their patron saint if the individual is not formally canonized yet?

As far as I know a blessed can be. At least, my sister had as her confirmation saint a blessed. And if that was not allowed, our parish priest would have been the first to tell us.

The Church has codified no practice of choosing a patron saint, for Confirmation or otherwise. It is a local custom considered under popular piety. Therefore I see no obstacle to choosing a Venerable or Blessed for yourself.

Don’t presume that it will be recorded on your certificate or in the sacramental register, either. There may be a space for it, but no law says that it is to be recorded.

You can.
We do all the time.
We record it in the record, yes.
Best wishes!
