Opinion: I for one wouldn’t want to see such a thing. Don’t we have enough days on the calendar devoted to some memorial of Mary? I think we do, and three of those (at least) are obligatory feasts.
As far back as I can remember, Jan 1 was the feast of the Circumcision – an obligatory feast day. Then, the memorial of the day shifted away from Circumcision, which is hardly ever mentioned at all. The feast of the Circumcision was on a par with the feast of the Immaculate Conception in December. Why was it so important BEFORE, but it is not NOW? Hmmmm?
Briefly, I think Jan 1 was another Marian feast day, then switched to what is now, what?, the feast of the Holy Family.
To me, seeing these shifting sands makes me irritated that the Bishops want to force THE FEAST OF SOMETHING on us every Jan 1. Whatever it is, we have to go to Mass, AFTER two days of obligation in December – IC and Christmas. In and of itself, January 1 is nothing. New Year’s Day. So what? What PASTORAL reason is there for a day of obligation on January 1 except to force US Catholics to go to church another day?
Circumcision fell off the calendar because of what it focused on, not politically correct. Another feast of Mary, the Queenship, was overkill, I think on Marian feasts. The Holy Family may be seen as controversial in the future, as many families are non-traditional; too many peoples’ feelings may be hurt because of it.
The Pope says clericalism is an evil in the Church, it is the abuse of power. If it were up to me, this would be one of the places to start, in eliminating JAN 1 as a day of obligation. This is germane, I believe, to the general topic here.
