Can a permantly impotent person marry?

It is not an opinion it is a fact.

Your statement is senseless, since a marriage of 40 years would be assumed to be valid unless there was evidence to the contrary. I doubt if a couple would announce that it hadn’t been consumated. :rolleyes: If it hadn’t that would be grounds for an annulment.
 
For those of you who want an analogy: I have a medical condition that limits what I can do. I cannot be an astronaut nor could I pass a physical to be in the military. Through no fault of my own, I can’t become either of those. As sad as it is (luckily I don’t want to be those things), I physically cannot fulfill every aspect of the job. It is the same thing with marriage. It is not that Nasa doesn’t want me to go into space but that I am not physically equipped to perform the task.

In case you were wondering, there’s something called infertility. I hear it’s somewhat common among people who adopt.

I think the analogies are a little lopsided. You’re comparing something that prohibits a person from performing a job to something that doesn’t. A couple could could have a Josephite marriage, never have sex, adopt children, and live happy lives. This clearly demonstrates that sex is not necessary for a marriage…except that marriage, by definition, includes the capability of having sex.

If you want to make a true comparison, it would be like NASA requiring that a person be able to juggle at least three bowling pins at one time. It’s not necessary for the job, but it it would be required by definition.

The comparison is not so lopsided as you think. Several trained astronauts never went to space. They all had to meet the same physical requirements to enter the program, however. Take a look at this list and look for the phrase “no flights.” You could say they were “Josephite” astronauts since they had the ability and right to go to space but did not.

I do not comprehend the issues you have. Why would anyone wish to questions your parents’ marriage?

Dispensation cannot be granted. This is a matter of divine natural law. The Church can, and does, only grant dispensations from purely ecclesiastical laws.

No, I am not a priest but that does not prevent me from having some knowledge of canon law. Priests are fallible and can make mistakes. Alternatively, you may has misunderstood or misinterpreted what they said.

The impediment of impotence is an impediment of divine natural law. The Church cannot grant dispensations from divine natural law. The Church only grants dispensation from ecclesiastical laws.

Two EWTN priests on national television? I didn’t misunderstand. They went through the differences (infertility vs inability) and they said that a Bishop can allow it.
