Can a priest be my sponsor for confirmation and first communion?

I really want a sponsor that know more about church doctrine/history/aplogetics than me and don’t know anyone but the priest in that category.

I can find no Canonical barrier that would prevent a priest from serving as one’s sponsor. You can ask a priest to sponsor you, but unless he happens to be retired, be mindful of the fact that he probably has a very busy schedule and in addition to you, will need to devote time and consideration to others he counsels regularly.

Nothing would prevent him from doing so, but most will usually only Sponsor their own nephews or nieces.

Or godson:) My nephew’s godfather is a priest and was his confirmation sponsor. Of course, I would think most priests do not agree to be a godparent to someone who is not a niece or nephew. This priest is a very close family friend and does not have family in the area.
