I can find no Canonical barrier that would prevent a priest from serving as one’s sponsor. You can ask a priest to sponsor you, but unless he happens to be retired, be mindful of the fact that he probably has a very busy schedule and in addition to you, will need to devote time and consideration to others he counsels regularly.
Or godson My nephew’s godfather is a priest and was his confirmation sponsor. Of course, I would think most priests do not agree to be a godparent to someone who is not a niece or nephew. This priest is a very close family friend and does not have family in the area.
