…just curiosity. I´m sure anyone here is better informed tha me 😉

Yeah. The Eastern Catholics Rites are in full communion.

Rite refers to the liturgical tradition and certain variants in canon law.

I know they are in full communion, but I never saw an eatsern cardinal, and I wonder why

I googled Eastern Catholic Cardinals. There are currently eight:
-Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir, Patriarch Emeritus of Antioch of the Maronites
-Antonios Naguib, Patriarch Emeritus of Alexandria of the Copts
-Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, Patriarch of Antioch of the Maronites
-Louis Raphaël I Sako, Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans
-George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church
-Lucian Mureșan, Major Archbishop of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church
-Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church
-Berhaneyesus Demerew Souraphiel, head of the Ethiopian Catholic Church

Yeah there are several Eastern Catholics. They always stand out to me because their vestments are distinctive.

Pope Francis just created Cardinal Sako in the last consistory. He is doing amazing work leading the church in Iraq. Lots of martyrs there. We should keep him and his church in prayer.

Wow you are great! Thanks for all the replies, I´ll read more about the cardinals. 🙂

I guess it’s possible but highly unlikely. The Pope of Rome is head of the Church of Rome and it is his duty to uphold the Latin traditions. Most eastern bishops are not bi-ritual and have probably not celebrated the Latin Mass. We have traditions that are different compared to the Roman Church. It would be like making the Prime Minister of Canada the President of the United States. If and Eastern Catholic was elected bishop it would be interesting to see how that would work.

This is mainly why I ask - I was not sure if there´s a duty to celebrate the latin rite when both are in communion. So, I wondered, if an eastern cardinal elected as pope could simply use the eastern rite.

It’s technically a possibility, but, as was said above, highly unlikely.

Since the Ethiopian Catholic Church is a Metropolitan sui iuris Church, Cardinal Berhaneyesus is Metropolitan Archeparch (Archbishop) – there exists an Archeparchy of Addis Abeba and three other eparchies in that Metropolis.

Sure, its possible.

But once anyone is installed as Pope, they are the ordinary of the Latin Rite Diocese of Rome, and their responsibilities include celebrating many Latin Rite liturgical functions for the faithful.

So, while someone of an Eastern rite could be elected, once he got in, he would be essentially and de facto Latin Rite.

Keep in mind that a non-Italian, Latin Rite Pope was considered a big shock just a couple of Popes ago.
I would hope someday, if the world doesn’t end first, we would have had Popes from all parts of the world that are in communion with Rome.

I’d like to see an American pope being elected. It would really help encourage vocations to the priesthood, if American young men saw that it was possible for them to rise to the top.

Me too. I think Chaput or Lori would make a good Pope, but probably they aren’t even in the running.
I don’t think I’d care for Dolan or Cupich as Pope.

I’m not sure that it would help the American priesthood at this point to be suddenly flooded with men trying to “reach the top”. That’s not really the point. I also think that it’s already common knowledge that any priest could eventually become a cardinal or Pope.

Yes. Any male baptized Christian can be elected Pope…if your question is, what are the odds of an Eastern Rite Bishop being elected is a horse of a different color.
