Can an eastern rite bishop become the pope?

I have seen a serious case made that noone outside the arch-diocese of Rome should be chosen
That would limit the search area for the supreme pontiff of the universal church to a 16 mi radius of Saint John Lateran Cathedral in Rome…

I agree actually. It does seem like a Bishop will be a better father to his Church if he is from that Church and stays as Bishop until retirement or death. I believe Pope Benedict actually wrote about this once.

That is the modern norm . . . it, too, would be “corrected” in this argument.
3 of the last 4 bishops here in Pittsburgh were local men, and this is a fairly sizable, important diocese, no?

The main problem I would see with that is that it would be a disappointment to a lot of prospective papabiles who are working hard, keeping their noses to the grindstone with the hope of making it to the top position.

I sincerely hope there are not that many prelates who have a “hope” of becoming pope, that type of ambition of Bishops is exactly what needs to disappear, if it exists.

This is exactly why only locals should be appointed as the norm. To avoid this kind of clericalism which is a plague to the church. The church is not a company that has levels of management. It’s an institution of service.

Any man who hopes to be a bishop or Pope should never be elected to such positions.

It’s the very reason why sardica made the canon it did.

It will limit the search for the bishop to the diocese and the surrounding suffrage dioceses.

Being Supreme Pontiff is an aspect of that local bishopric, not something of its own, and exists solely as an exercise of the authority of that bishop.

Such persons should be avoided for consideration at all costs! 😱😱😱

If already bishops, they should be removed from their sees.
