It’s really not hard to strike a balance, I’ve done it for 77 years. Society today just tries to wipe out that balance and convince us that “anything goes.” Going to extremes either way isn’t helping. Strong faith, good judgement( gift of the Holy Spirit), common sense and a well formed conscience according to the guidelines of the Catholic Church, are needed. God Bless, Memaw
Well, yes, if you have everything you need to strike the balance then of course it will be easy. But the point is many people do not have all these things, and often it is not their fault but rather a residual effect of the way they were raised. Everyone has their own personal struggle, some people have a hard time with chastity, some with pride, some with gossip, rash judgement and calumny, and some people have a hard time determining which actions need to be avoided for the sake of avoiding scandal. What good do you expect to come out of belittling other people’s struggles simply because they are not difficult for you?

I am NOT belittling other peoples struggles. You have NO idea how many struggles I have been through either!! That’s NO excuse for doing the wrong thing. Jesus did say the road to Heaven is narrow and difficult. Not all those with serious difficulties choose the other road. We try to blame everything on our childhood, the way we were raised. There comes a time when we have to take responsibility for how we act. Life has always had its problems and always will as long as we are living on this earth. Jesus gives us the strength to live according to HIS WILL if we trust HIM. Some do and some don’t and some just make excuses. God Bless, Memaw

I understand what scandal is.

I under stand that a couple who is dating, engaged or otherwise romantically involved could cause scandal by cohabitating.

I don’t see familial relationships the same way at all. Brothers and sisters in law are family. They should be able to offer each other shelter without people feeling scandalized. 🤷
In a perfect world, I agree. But I heard some guy say that he preferred his partner’s sister and also mentioned one encounter with her. If I knew such a person, and he goes to stay at his sister-in-law’s place for whatever reason, that would be scandalous.

So without knowing the details of a situation, there isn’t any point in disagreeing with someone who knows what they are talking about. People gossiping about a scandal doesn’t change the fact that it’s a scandal.

You’ll note the only thing there that’s actual church teaching is the definition of scandal. While I respect our apologists here, they are not representatives of official church teaching either. In that particular question, being of the age where pretty much everyone has roommates, I know the vast majority of the people I talk to would consider the assumption that opposite-sex roommates were necessarily having sex to be laughable.

I don’t think any of us disagree on the definition of scandal. What we disagree on is when it is actually likely to occur. Many of us think that in such situations the danger of scandal has been greatly exaggerated, and that most people are not going to conclude that sin is occurring, especially if the couple is clear as to what the situation is. Of course there are gossips and suspicious people in the world, but such people there is almost no helping their getting the wrong idea - having dealt with such merely talking with a man at length in public gets tongues wagging.
Are you representing actual Church teaching?? Prove it, show us some documents!! Being of the age where pretty much everyone has 'roommates" doesn’t make it right. Just blame it on the gossips! You don’t ‘disagree’ on the definition of scandal, but only when it should be in agreement with your ideas. As my Mom used to say, “If everyone else was jumping off the Missouri River Bridge, would you jump off too.” I wonder who really has the “Wrong Idea”. God Bless, Memaw

Does that mean were supposed to go around asking for the "details’ of every situation?? I sure hope not. God Bless, Memaw

No, I’m saying there is no “actual church teaching” beyond the definition of scandal to prove it. Therefore it is a matter about which we must use our prudential judgement (which in a matter like this includes experience) about the matter. Scandal of necessity includes facts about the outside world in its judgement - namely facts about what is indeed likely to cause others to sin. Those facts are based on the conclusions others will draw.

Again I will draw the parallel to modesty - there are things that are culturally determined. There are places in the world where a knee-length, short-sleeved dress would be immodest. That hardly means I am following the crowd by wearing such a dress. I know people who would consider a sexual relationship to be occurring merely because I met a man in a public place, or even stayed late at work with a male coworker present - should I refrain as well from such things out of fear of scandal?

Actually, as far as that phrase, I’m going to resort to XCKD. My friends are, by and large, good solid sensible people who follow God. I’ve also had plenty of good solid priests I know and respect in real life. I know and respect their faith and sense much more than random people on the internet. If they all jumped off a bridge, I would at least seriously check that there wasn’t something wrong with the bridge that warranted jumping off, because I don’t hang out with stupid people, nor with those given to immorality!

And you claim to not be mocking people, and yet use phrases as though you were speaking to a little child. Your words certainly come off as mocking, and you accuse those who disagree with you of sins you cannot tell over the internet.

Actually, in this case, it does. There is no inherent sin in living with a member of the opposite sex, so long as modesty and chastity are preserved. If it were the case that no one could get the wrong idea, then it would be abundantly clear that there was no sin.

So now it’s the bridges fault, that’s almost funny. I am not mocking people, I am just defending the truth. Seems to me that some here are the ones that are name calling and throwing accusations around, twisting words etc. Like your last paragraph !!! Some would make excellent liberal reporters they are sooo good with twisting words. I stand by everything I have said. When one has to go to such extremes to prove their point such as,

" I know people who would consider a sexual relationship to be occurring merely because I met a man in a public place, or even stayed late at work with a male coworker present - should I refrain as well from such things out of fear of scandal?"
That’s pretty sad. I’d say. God Bless, Memaw

I don’t see any actual arguments in here? Please highlight them for me. I just see you insulting other people arguments (and calling it “sad” is an insult) without actually making any effort to refute them.

You tell me I am twisting words and throw out “liberal” as an insult, and I am supposed to believe that you are not mocking or name-calling?

Did I say ‘you’? I thought I said some. If the shoe fits, wear it, if not, ignore it. God bless. Memaw

Might want to take a deep breath and calm down a little before you post again.

Everyone needs to discuss the topic. NOT the poster.

You also said that the sentence after directly referencing my post.

In any case, if you have an actual argument, or a refutation of someone’s, I’d be happy to hear it. But I’m not going to keep responding to name-calling, and I’d be happy to go back through and point out a few examples.

Memaw,

You are getting quite vitriolic and this is hurting your cause and will affect how other posters see you in the future, long after this thread is dead. Please try to discuss the issue-not people, with charity.

I am calm, have always been calm and maybe we should practice what we preach! God Bless, Memaw

Go right ahead but be sure and point out all the others too. God Bless, Memaw

As the OP,

I never meant this to turn nasty, to be a debate or to be this long.

This was hypothetical.

Some of you really need to stop and think before posting. Is it charitable? Kind? What example of Catholicism am I giving to non-Catholics reading this thread?

This was about providing shelter. Not letting your partner sleep on the street or in a place causing them harm. I gave a personal example because I am someone who has been without a home before. It’s possible, it happens.

Nobody is being ‘liberal’ or trying to justify sin as I’ve been accused of here.

Of course there’s no excuse for doing wrong and of course we have to take responsibility for how we act. I never said otherwise, but that doesn’t necessarily make it easy to do so. Claiming that it is never difficult to determine what is and is not scandalous belittles the difficulties experienced by those who do honestly have a hard time with that.

That is why we trust the Catholic Church and her teachings and try to help others understand why we do, instead of making all kind of excuses for wrong actions. We should do our best to help them learn why certain actions are not according to God’s will. Society, or the weather or where we happen to live or age should never come before God’s will. Jesus told us the ‘road’ is difficult and narrow, but HE will give us the strength and courage to follow it if we trust Him. God Bless, Memaw
