OK–I checked this one, as it was something new–and I don’t think that a contest that involves children “creating spells” such as “Homeworkus Banishus” is in any way related to actual occult practice.
No, the Harry Potter novels are simply that … works of fiction set in a world in which there is an alternate science known as magic (consider that telephones, radios, and electricity are called “Muggle substitutes for magic”). I have yet to read any condemnation of the Harry Potter novels as “promoting witchcraft” and/or “promoting occult practice(s)” which betrays any familiarity with the actual content of the novels in question other than to stop at the point of saying that certain words and phrases are used, without applying any critical thought. I and my oldest son have read all five novels published thus far and watched all three movies released so far, and we expect to read the next two books when they’re released (I’m less certain about the fourth movie, because they left out so much in the third, and I’m afraid the fourth will be hash).
I started to read it and had to stop. I started laughing so hard it was hurting.
The author of this says that the “magic arts” in Harry Potter are real and that they know then because they were a “New Age healer” and practiced them.
And that they know “Witches, warlocks, and wizards” who also practice them.
I am speaking as a former neo-pagan, wiccan. There is no such thing as “wizards” or “warlocks”. A male witch is still called a witch.
This person is not stating the facts. Nothing done in the Harry Potter stories resembles in any way the practices of the occult nor of wicca.
There is nothing wrong with the Harry Potter stories. They are just stories.
Amen ByzCath. I too was a former neo-pagan. You are 100% correct. I particularly liked the comment in the article that about all muggles as being stupid and dumb. I guess the author skimmed over the point that Hermione and other characters in the book have one muggle parent. I have never read anything disparaging about this parent in the books.
