“And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.” - Matthew 5:22. Is this to be taken literally? Can this be said for all cases?

The translation I’m looking at says “and if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell”. I would have to wonder whether saying “Thou Fool” really had the same implications then that it does now, as well as whether it was just really trying to get the point across the curses in general can lead a person to hell. I don’t think anyone would consider calling someone a fool today to be cursing them.
Also see Proverbs 26:1-11 and how it talks about a “fool”. I think there is a lot more going on here than the English translation purveys.

I think the impulse which leads us to say, “thou fool!” or “curse you!” is the same impulse to define ourselves over against other people we don’t like and with whom we don’t agree, and which usually ends in some form of violence or open conflict. Calling someone, “thou fool” amounts to little more than saying, “my goodness depends on you being foolish and accursed.” This impulse towards “us and them” or “I’m good, you’re a cursed fool” sort of thinking is one of the many manifestations of original sin, and is a symptom of being run by, with, and for death and violence as opposed to love. As such, it can truly lead to hell.

It depends. If you are pointing out the fault of your brother/neighbor/etc… before getting your own life in order, and publicly calling out his sin without some important reason and desiring that his soul be condemned, then you are sinning against him by rash judgment, detraction, calumny, or other/combination.
If you are pointing out an error to him privately, or within reason, and your goal is for his spiritual growth, you are engaging in an act of mercy…admonish the sinner.

I think it depends on the purpose of why you are calling someone a fool. If you love this person & caring for him & you called him a fool to prevent him from doing something harmful, so in my opinion it is not a mortal sin leading to hell BUT if you are calling him a fool to humilate him & destroy him psychologically,then it is a mortal sin. Personal opinion]
