Can Catholics admit that no one knows what happens when you die?

Of course EVERY religion has faith, but for true debate and discourse to occur, and for true peace to be achieved, I believe that we much all acknowledge that no one possesses this knowledge. Life is Chaos, so let’s all be kind to one another while we are still here on Earth.

Well I certainly dont know with the certainty of everyday direct experience…nor does anybody else. Isnt that rather obvious?

This issue is what level of certainty constitutes “knowing” surely?

There are some things we are not meant to fully understand until we are ready. But, I do think there have been enough revelations that provide some sense of what might come. Much of the Christian understanding of the afterlife comes from the promises that are made to us in scripture.

Fingers crossed?

Can you articulate why you believe this?

What exactly makes your opinion about the “knowability” of life after death any more plausible than that of the Catholic religion?

Catholics believe that Christ, who is God, revealed to us what happens after we die. We cite this as our evidence. What counter-evidence do you have to offer?

Not sure what you mean really. Catholics cannot pretend they don’t believe in heaven in Hell. They also cannot pretend they know who is in Hell or how people will be judged before they go to one or the other. So Catholics can admit limits to their knowledge, but we can’t pretend anything is on the table (e.g. reincarnation).

You do realise that some major schools of Jewish faith had come to this knowledge 100s of years before Jesus.
Jesus did stand on the shoulders of those before him.

OP:
Soooooo what Catholic told you that someone was going to hell? Ane why do you believe we’re all like that?

It is appointed unto man once to die and after that the judgement.

That is truth.

I know there’s an afterlife, and I know there’s a heaven and hell, and I have great certainty of these facts. Not sure what you’re getting at.

Yes, I was going to say I haven’t been there and taken a photo to show you if that’s what you mean, but I have great confidence that I will meet up with God and I’ll be judged/ evaluated/ etc. when I die. This confidence comes from faith and not from some sort of scientific “proof”.

I do believe a number of the NDE stories I have read, but I don’t think believing in those is necessary to believe in the Catholic teachings on afterlife.

I think you misunderstand the meaning of “Faith”

I believe that we much all acknowledge that no one possesses this knowledge.
If the only fonts of knowledge were experience and the reasonable extensions of experience (metaphysics) then knowledge of any mystery would be impossible.

Only a mystical wisdom can hope to wrap itself around mystery. Mystical and theological wisdom, grounded in faith rather than experience, possess an intrinsic superiority to metaphysical wisdom. I am more certain of theological wisdom than metaphysical wisdom, and of mystical wisdom than theological wisdom

Love the statue!

Love how she’s old and frail before passing over, then young and whole going into the Lords Bosom.

The difference between confidence and certainty wrt knowledge seems apposite.
The knowledge from faith seems different.

Before they were Christ said “I AM”.

But they do, billions of souls. Thousands of saints all know. Very well.

after you croak; you get two judgments

your interim judgment which determines your place of abode for the next few centuries; or days; (depending on the Father’s Will)
THEN (emphasis exaggerated on purpose) on the Final Day when Jesus cometh for the 2nd Time; you get your Final Judgment

Good Luck; behave yourselves

They light your body on fire and atheists get the “DMT argument” for a little while and disappear while the rest of us ascend to heaven for eternity. Especially me because I’m working hard to stay off the naughty list! Everyone’s happy!

Look up “near death experience”… try finding ones where valid medical doctors were involved to pronounce someone dead…
